Is Torch-on Membrane The Best Waterproofing Solution in Malaysia?

With this bitumen technology dominating about 70% of the flat roof market around the world, many waterproofing contractors in Malaysia are quick to jump on the bandwagon. How reliable is torch-on membrane waterproofing in Malaysia?

A quick search on Google for the term “torch-on membrane waterproofing Malaysia” will yield countless results from different contractors across the country – and a 5-minute read is sufficient for one to know that the technology relies on thick, pre-made bitumen mats that claim to be highly durable after torching. It is a widely used method to prevent water infiltration in various construction projects, and contractors are also pushing for this technology to be implemented in residential units. However, the successful application of this technique can be influenced by several factors, including ambient temperature and the heat generated during the torching process.

In Malaysia’s tropical climate, its weather conditions, elevated temperatures, and other environmental conditions present a unique challenge to the quality and consistency of torch-on membrane installation.

Let’s look into the suitability of this method.

What is torch-on membrane?

Torch-on membrane waterproofing involves applying layers of specialised waterproofing material, typically modified bitumen, to create a sealed and water-resistant surface. The mats are at least 3mm thick, and the term “torch-on” refers to the application process, where heat is used to melt the modified bitumen mat so that the treated material adheres securely to the substrate – typically flat concrete surfaces.

Torch-on membrane waterproofing is only durable when done right.

Torch-on membranes require the application of heat to create a secure bond with the substrate. In Malaysia’s hot and humid climate, the high temperatures can make the application process challenging, as the material can soften quickly, affecting the installation quality. Moreover, the high humidity often means trapping moisture beneath the waterproofing bitumen layer, which causes pressure to build up over time – threatening the structural integrity of the concrete and bitumen layer simultaneously.

Additionally, torch-on membranes can be sensitive to UV radiation from the sun. Malaysia’s intense 12-hour sunlight all year round can cause the membrane to deteriorate more quickly over time compared to other countries, leading to cracks, brittleness, and reduced waterproofing effectiveness.

Some of the key disadvantages of torch-on membrane waterproofing in Malaysia’s tropical climate include the following:

1. Effects of hot weather on workmanship

Working under the scorching sun and enduring the elevated temperatures during torch-on membrane installation can significantly impact the workmanship and overall performance of the bitumen layer’s application process. The intense heat not only affects the comfort and safety of the workers but also introduces challenges related to maintaining optimal conditions for proper adhesive melting and bonding. The combination of high ambient temperatures and heat generated from the torching process can lead to inconsistencies in the adhesive melting phase, potentially compromising the integrity of the waterproofing system. Moreover, the discomfort caused by the heat can lead to reduced work efficiency and productivity, as workers may be inclined to rush through the installation process to minimise their exposure to the heat.

2. Issues with adhesive melting and bonding

Consistent adhesive melting and bonding of the bitumen layer are crucial for the long-term effectiveness of torch-on membrane installations. When workers rapidly install the layer to escape the hot weather, this can cause uneven melting of adhesives and insufficient bonding between the membrane and the substrate. Ultimately, this leads to weakened waterproofing properties, reduced durability, and potential leakages over time. Inadequate adhesive melting also affects the uniformity of the application, which is essential for creating a seamless and reliable waterproofing barrier.

Poorly maintained torch-on membrane will have a significantly shorter lifespan, evident through signs of splits and cracks that can allow water to seep through. Source.

3. Bubbling from trapped moisture beneath the bitumen layer

Bubbling arises when pockets of trapped moisture or air become encapsulated beneath the membrane’s surface. This issue can arise due to improper adhesive melting as mentioned earlier, suboptimal torching techniques due to untrained workers, uneven substrate preparation due to manufacturing defects, and environmental conditions such as Malaysia’s extremely fluctuating tropical weather of rain and shine. Thus, these bubble pockets compromise the membrane’s ability to form a seamless and effective barrier against water infiltration – which leads to the next problem.

Blisters such as shown above are a common problem for torch-on membranes due to trapped moisture and air during the application. Source.

4. Repeated cutting and patching of bitumen layer as repair

Addressing the aforementioned bubbling problem involves cutting up and patching over the membrane. This means that instead of a complete removal, the affected section is meticulously cut out to allow the trapped moisture or air to escape. Subsequently, a fresh piece of membrane is skillfully applied over the excised area. While contractors argue that this approach minimises the need for a comprehensive replacement, the potential long-term repercussions from the accumulation of patches negatively affect the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the installation. With each additional patch, the numerous seams and joints resulting from extensive patching could weaken the system’s resistance to water infiltration. Aesthetics-wise, discrepancies in colour, texture, and alignment between patches and the original membrane can lead to an uneven and unprofessional appearance.

Delamination happens when the membrane layer separates from the flat roof’s surface due to poor workmanship. Source.

5. High expertise is required for the proper installation of torch-on membranes

Proper installation of torch-on membranes requires skilled workers who are trained in the correct application techniques. Inadequate installation can result in poor waterproofing performance and costly repairs, often borne by the client. Delamination is also a common problem in torch-on membrane waterproofing. The membrane layer gradually detaches from the concrete surface if the membrane is not heated correctly, or when moisture is present during the application process. Experts in this bitumen technology must be highly trained in the standard operating procedures from pre-application to post-application for sustainable success.

Additionally, your safety relies solely on the torch-on membrane worker’s work procedure – as evident in this fire incident.

While torching involves manual labour, it pays for the contractors to hire experienced workers instead of skimping on human resources to prevent unfortunate incidents like causing fires in the clients’ buildings. Source.

In October 2019, a significant fire erupted at the SkyCity Convention Centre in Auckland, New Zealand. The site, a major construction project, was engulfed in flames for several days. The fire’s rapid spread was attributed, in part, to the use of torch-on membrane waterproofing, a construction material that proved susceptible to ignition. The catalyst for the blaze was a worker who inadvertently left a blowtorch unattended, causing the membrane to smoulder. This eventually led to the fire’s ignition and subsequent expansion. The incident garnered widespread attention due to its immense scale, the challenges encountered in extinguishing the flames, and the ensuing discussions regarding construction safety practices. Notably, all the workers present were experienced professionals.

According to a report by Fire and Emergency NZ, the fire originated from the smouldering of the cardboard core within a waterproof roofing membrane roll. This smouldering persisted for over 30 minutes during a lunch break before escalating into a full-blown fire, which persisted for a period of 10 days.

When it comes to waterproofing, it is best to choose a well-rounded solution that is durable and safe throughout the application process.

Solutions for Water Leakage Problems in Your Neighbourhood Mosque

Ensuring that your neighborhood mosque is safe and clean for the community begins with the correct waterproofing method.

A mosque is a holy place of worship that accommodates many worshippers on a daily basis. On top of functioning as a place of worship, mosques in neighbourhoods also serve as safe places for community gatherings and youth activities throughout the year. Thus, ensuring that the mosque is clean and free from water leakage problems by waterproofing the building is paramount to the safety and comfort of worshippers and visitors alike.

Mosques are also considered architectural wonders. In Malaysia, we see an increase in the number of visitors – both Muslims and non-Muslims – at some of the iconic mosques in Malaysia such as the National Mosque (Masjid Negara) in Kuala Lumpur which is considered one of the most beautiful mosques in our country. Hence, it is also crucial to maintain these sacred structures to protect our national heritage.

Maintaining existing facilities is just as important as upgrading them.

Maintaining the waterproofing properties of a building isn’t something that most occupants have on top of their minds when discussing maintenance. For starters, waterproofing is often taken for granted and mistaken as a permanent attribute of a building – and everyone casually assumes that the engineers and architects who built the structure have taken waterproofing into account.

Secondly, the water damage caused by subtle water leaks behind the walls and ceiling takes a while to become visible enough to notice, in the form of yellow stains, mould growth, warping and bubbling, etc. This is especially common in buildings with poor waterproofing works as the signs of water damage will not appear until months or even years have passed. By the time the stains become noticeable, the damage would have been extensive and expensive to repair.

Peeling Paint Caused By Water Seepage

Neglected waterproofing around the wudhu area in the mosque causes peeling paint on the walls that are not tiled, on the opposite side of the washing area.

As for the facilities in mosques, the ablution area or tempat wudhu has the highest risk of facing water leakage problems due to the very nature and function of the room in which it was built for.

Wudhu is a physical and spiritual act to purify oneself and is required by Muslim prayers to go through before praying.

Man Washing Arm Before Praying

Wudhu is a designated room where worshippers clean themselve before praying. Source: ZonaSyariah.

The tempat wudhu is equipped with many water faucets and drainage to accommodate more people when they wash before praying. One can imagine the frequency of exposure to wetness and high humidity in that area. Thus, if the area is treated with poor waterproofing methods, the results are visible in the form of peeling paints, water-damaged walls, mould, and malodour – all of which would make prayers feel uncomfortable during wudhu.

Here’s a video footage we captured during our visit to a client’s mosque wudhu area to inspect and solve the waterproofing issue.

A Comparison Of Waterproofing Services in Malaysia

Understand what each of these most popular waterproofing companies offer and the technology they apply.

Waterproofing plays a crucial role for the structural integrity of a building, and any rookie engineer and architect who underestimates the severity of water damages were quick to regret their negligence in this area. Constant exposure to water, moisture, and high humidity can cause severe damage to a building over time, particularly in the form of rotting, rusting, cracking, and warping – not to mention enabling hazardous fungi and mould to thrive. This is a common occurrence for buildings that are in Malaysia thus waterproofing is essential for the tropical weather in the country.

Having said that, the waterproofing industry in Malaysia is growing, just as the awareness of its importance. These companies offer services that are primarily targeted to prevent water from penetrating through building walls and ceilings, but they employ different methods and solutions in overcoming water leakage problems.

Let’s take a look:

Different Waterproofing Methods in Malaysia

Here’s a quick rundown on popular waterproofing methods in Malaysia.

PU Injection

The PU Injection process involves drilling holes into the affected area.

Contractors who offer PU Injections as a waterproofing method usually drill holes into the floors,  walls, or ceiling areas before pumping PU into the hole using an injection gun. The chemical composition in the injection is then triggered to expand and fill up the gaps of the walls or ceiling in hopes of filling up the cracks.

Torch-on Membrane

The torch-on method is popular for waterproofing flat roof areas.

Torch-on waterproofing, also known as bitumen torch-on, requires a torch to heat fuse asphalt material directly onto the roof. This process then creates a waterproof barrier that covers the entire roof surface at an even thickness. It is often used on flat roofs that have a common problem of puddling and ponding rainwater that sits atop the roof for extended periods of time.

Cementitious Waterproofing

Cementitious Waterproofing involves application of cement to treat water leakage issues.

The cementitious waterproof coating is a two-component coating that offers breathability when applied, on both the outer and inner side of concrete and masonry surfaces. In addition to keeping moisture out, these coatings can prevent damage from mold, mildew and water infiltration.

Rubber membrane

Rubber waterproofing paint is also known as elastomeric waterproofing paint.

Rubber waterproofing paint is made of liquified oil, latex, or rubber to be applied onto surfaces either with a sprayer or a painting tool. To give the finishing a bit more structure, a fibre texture layer is added between paint layers to further strengthen its waterproofing qualities.

Why Are Some Waterproofing Solutions Cheaper Than Others?

Why Are Other Nanotechnology Waterproofing Service Providers Cheaper -What’s the difference?

Read about other nanotechnology waterproofing solutions offered in the market and how they compare to ours regarding reliability and effectiveness.

In Klang Valley, there are quite a few players in the waterproofing service industry who offer their services at a steal. Among them, you may also spot companies that even claim to use nanotechnology despite having no certification. On a superficial level, these companies appear to offer the best of both worlds – but not all waterproofing service providers are the specialists they claim to be.  As a consumer, it is wise to note that overly cheap waterproofing works have many downsides and disadvantages that will cause more harm than good in the long run.

So, how did they manage to offer “nanotechnology” waterproofing services at such a low price?

1. No Proof of Product Certification.

Everybody can make claims on their ads and marketing materials, but they are most likely unable to offer any valid proof of certification. Some may claim that their products are imported from overseas – but bear in mind that the climate in Malaysia differs from that of other countries and may affect the effectiveness of nanotechnology solutions. This is where NanoVerify come into play – this organisation has established stringent tests to ensure that products marketed to mass Malaysians are safe to use and authentic nanotechnology products.

Nano-G is the first waterproofing solution using Nanotechnology in Malaysia, and our methods and solutions are accredited by NanoVerify. This accolade serve as an assurance to clients and customers that Nano-G’s solutions are 100% genuine as claimed.

Nano-G Earns NANOVerify Certification for Exceptional Waterproofing & Anti-Slip Services

Nano-G is certified authentic and safe by NanoVerify after undergoing extensive tests.

2. Cheaper Solutions Often Trap Moisture Beneath The Surface.

Cheap Non-breathable Waterproofing May Cause Paint Bubbling

Post-treatment with cheap solutions can lead to other problems surfacing over time.

The most common cheap waterproofing solutions involve layering surfaces with plastic films or non-breathable coatings. If the work done by contractors is shoddy, the films or coatings end up trapping moisture or humidity from beneath or behind the treated surface – leading to paint bubbling or cracking on the surface after some time.

On the other hand, Nano-G’s nanotechnology waterproofing solution maintains the original breathability and porosity of treated surfaces, because the process involves no “plastic films”. Instead, our solution has the same viscosity as water, is invisible, odourless, and creates water-repelling protection on top and beneath treated surfaces after application by lining the pores and capillaries of the materials with hydrophobic nanoparticles. This allows trapped moisture to exit the surface while preventing external moisture from entering it.

3. Cheaper Solutions Are Not Durable.

As long as the solution involves layering the surface with extra coatings or materials, the coating is susceptible to abrasion, deterioration, or mechanical wear. Depending on the purity and grade of those solutions, the coatings may wear off and eventually need replacement – the cheaper it is, the sooner you’ll have to get contractors to rework the building.

At Nano-G, not only our nanotechnology waterproofing solutions are resistant to abrasion, deterioration, or mechanical wear, but they are also more resistant to UV damage and do not turn yellow over time. These factors combine to demonstrate that surfaces treated by Nano-G exhibit prolonged durability against various weathering and human-use damages.

Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing solutions has high durability against scratches and abrasions.

4. Cheap solutions may not be safe for people.

To lower the costs, companies that offer cheap waterproofing services use solvent-based solutions – these are highly toxic and can cause health issues when inhaled in the long run, for inhabitants of premises and contractors who are continuously exposed to these hazards.

Nano-G believes in creating safe solutions for people and the planet. Our hospital-grade Nanotechnology 4th Generation Waterproofing solution is certified as non-toxic, approved by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), and earned the Green Label certification.

With the Green Label certification and approval from MOH, this makes us the one and only credible choice of waterproofing specialist by numerous hospitals across Malaysia.

Preventing Water Leakage Problems in Hotels & Resorts

With hundreds of water outlets in the building, don’t leave water leakage encounters up to chance.

Hotels and resorts can host up to hundreds or thousands of visitors per day, which means tons of water running through bathrooms, commercial kitchens, swimming pools, and spas by the minute across an extensive network of pipes and valves from the basement to all the way to the rooftop. Having said that, your hotel management’s contingency plan should take into consideration the potentially major problems which can arise from even seemingly small water leakages. After all, water leaks in hotels & resorts are bound to happen due to wear and tear.

Signs Your Hotel Has Water Leakage Problems

During periodic inspections conducted by your staff, they may have spotted  a few of the following visual indicators on walls and ceilings:

• Yellow water stains
• Peeling or bubbling paint
• Black mold, green algae growth
• Sagging ceiling

Other than visual cues, water leakage problems can be identified through a  distinct musty smell, and the atmosphere of the room or space usually feels heavy and humid.

The Consequences of Water Leakage Problems On Hotels & Resorts

1. Unpleasant aesthetics and bad first impressions of your hotel.

Water seepage into walls; either from the rain or bad plumping – does plenty of damage to wallpapers and paint. A paint job well done can look like shoddy work if the walls are continuously exposed to wetness. The most obvious indicators of water leakage problems are yellow stains and mold growth on plaster ceilings and walls.

Bad waterproofing leads to bad reviews

2. Poor customer experience.

Guests of hotels and resorts have set expectations on comfort and cleanliness before they check in to their rooms. Water leakage in rooms can cause dampness on the beds and sheets, plus an unshakeable musty odour that contributes to the overall uncomfortable feeling. Guests are more likely to leave bad reviews than good ones – and you don’t want to invite this kind of PR disaster.

3. Health & safety hazards.

Water damage affects the structural integrity of any building, and this fact is particularly concerning in larger buildings where multiple floors are affected by the leakage. On top of structural damage, water leakage can short-circuit electrical wirings inside or along the concrete walls, presenting a fire hazard. Last but not least, the airborne byproducts released by mold and mildew growth cause a myriad of diseases.

4. Preventable problems, and unnecessary costs.

These visual and structural problems, while being completely preventable, can end up costing the hotel a hefty sum in terms of time and budget; worse if the issue persists and is left unchecked. Consider the opportunity costs when the management finally decided to renovate the building to rectify the issue while losing out customers during the peak season.

Nano-G Waterproofing Your Exterior Walls For Your Bungalow

Everything To Know About Waterproofing The Exterior Walls Of Bungalows

The exterior walls of a building are exposed to rain, moisture, humidity, and extreme temperature changes – all of which over time will damage the walls and promote the growth of algae on its surface.

Bungalows have more exterior walls that are exposed to weathering compared to their semi-D and terrace counterparts. This means that bungalows are more likely to encounter rain or water seepage from the exterior wall into the interior rooms – a common construction defect experienced by many homeowners. As common as water leakage problems are, they can be quite a nightmare to deal with. Moreover, water damage comprises structural integrity, on top of turning the interior wall of your home or building into a breeding ground for humidity-loving mould and microbes. Prevention is better than cure. Thus, waterproofing the exterior walls of the bungalows is the most effective way to resolve or prevent future infiltration or damage sustained from weathering.

Nano-G Waterproofing Your Exterior Walls For Your Bungalow
Nano-G Waterproofing Your Exterior Walls For Your Bungalow

Bungalows are one of the most aesthetic buildings for homes. It is very important to protect the exterior walls as it is one of the assets for every bungalow. Without maintenance it will have visible dust, pale paint and mouldy layout of the home and it makes it less attractive.

The Best Method To Waterproof the Exterior Walls of your Bungalow

There are many waterproofing solutions available in the market, each marketed differently and offering varying value propositions. However, once homeowners understand that it is really only a matter of addressing the root cause of the problem, they eventually came to understand that Nano-G offers one of the most effective waterproofing solutions for exterior walls – from waterproofing wall paints to concrete.

Nano-G employs Nanotechnology in its solutions, whereby particles can penetrate deep into surfaces to create water-repellent structures at a nanoscale; that is 1000 times tinier than microscopic elements! These nano-sized water-repellent structures are inside the pores of paint and concrete, giving the treated surfaces an additional hydrophobic trait without changing their aesthetics or sealing the pores.

Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing Solution help to repel rainwater from seeping into the pores of the walls with hydrophobic layering.

In totality, Nano-G’s waterproofing methods ensure effectiveness, a prolonged lifetime of your building’s surface, and no visible changes to the original natural appearance of the materials.

The Benefits Of Waterproofing Exterior Wall Go Beyond Simply Preventing Water Seepage.

1. Waterproofing exterior wall can prevent algae and mould growth.

During rainy seasons, the high humidity from outside the building can seep through the exterior walls into the home, causing interior dampness.  This dampness poses another problem in many homes and is often the cause of peeling paint (indoors and outdoors), water leakage, and unsightly mould growth on the walls. These mould patches ruin the aesthetics of the building and can cause health issues to occupants over time.

Nano-G Waterproofing Your Exterior Walls For Your Bungalow

A well-protected and properly-maintained bungalow can prevent all these issues and it is worth the investment to waterproof your bungalow.

2. Waterproofing exterior walls can help maintain the aesthetic of the building.

Layering your exterior walls with a hydrophobic surface helps the building repel water and allows the surface to dry more quickly. Taking air pollution and other environmental factors into consideration, the water-repellent layer also prevents dirty water and dust from settling on the walls. This also means that you can prevent exterior wall paints from deteriorating, which reduced the overall appeal of your home.

Waterproofing with Nano-G Nanotechnology Solutions helps to maintain your bungalow even if it have been well-occupied for quite some time. Our solution does not require hacking and will keep your building safe from reconstruction damages.

When Is It Necessary to Waterproof your Exterior Walls

Waterproofing the exterior wall is best done at the time of construction, but if your bungalow is much older and waterproofing was not accounted for – it’s time to give it a go.

Ideally, it is best to waterproof the bungalow before moving in, or when the exterior wall is still new and free from hairline cracks. Alternatively, you can safeguard your bungalow’s exterior walls any time you find convenient.

Take note that over time, walls can develop cracks and they generally start from the weakest areas of the wall. If you have already been residing in the bungalow for a few years, it is imperative to find these cracks and seal them first to avoid further water leakage issues.

Nano-G Introduces Its 4th Generation Hospital-Grade Nanotechnology Waterproofing Solution

After 10 years of continuous research, development, servicing, and solving waterproofing issues for commercial & residential buildings across Malaysia, the company announces its 4th breakthrough in technology.

Nano-G is widely known in Malaysia’s waterproofing industry as the pioneer in leveraging the power of nanotechnology to prevent and overcome water leakage issues in homes and buildings. The company uses a water-based, liquid formulation that creates water-repelling protection on treated surfaces. Instead of sealing the porous surfaces with a film or later, the solution penetrates the microscopic capillaries of the surfaces that no elastomer or polymer can reach – to create a hydrophobic effect from the inside out.

Since its first introduction in 2010, the formulation has evolved over 4 generations after continuous R&D in Greece.

The superiority of Nano-G Hospital-grade Nanotechnology 4th Generation Waterproofing as compared to other regular or conventional waterproofing solutions in the market can be attested by client testimonials and various regulatory bodies in Malaysia.

Here are 5 validated pieces of evidence of the quality of our nanotechnology solution.

1. The first Waterproofing Solution in Malaysia to receive the NANOVerify certification by SIRIM.

As the industry’s pioneer, Nano-G had invested heavily in nanotechnology solutions even before the term was trending. With a growing interest in nanotechnology in recent years – both globally and locally, we see a rise in false claims by companies and independent contractors promoting their products and solutions as “nanotechnology”.

To combat the widespread misconception and protect the interest of the scientific community, SIRIM has enforced a set of stringent tests and standards for nanotechnology products and services in Malaysia under NANOVerify,  to undergo various characterization of nanoparticle tests. It is a branch of nanometrology that deals with the characterization, or measurement, of the physical and chemical properties of nanoparticles

Nano-G is the first company in Malaysia to receive the NANOVerify certification. The company is awarded the NANOVerified and NANOTrusted marking scheme for labeling and advertising usage. These accreditations serve as an assurance to clients and customers that Nano-G’s solutions are genuine as claimed.

Nano-G Accredited by NanoVerify

The NanoVerify certifications ensure the genuineness of our Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing Solution.

2. Engineered with a patented Greek Technology with CE quality marking scheme.

Nano-G Hospital-grade Nanotechnology 4th Generation Waterproofing is patented and validated by trusted quality assurance boards in Greece and Europe. The solutions we use bear the CE quality marking scheme, indicating that the formula has been assessed by the manufacturer and deemed to meet European safety, health, and environmental protection requirements.

Nano-G CE Marking Registration

This modern structural building is The Onassis Cultural Center in Greece. The building complies with European Safety standards to maintain the structures of the building, and their engineers use our Nanotechnology Waterproofing Solution to adhere to the policies.

3. Hospital-grade and environmentally friendly with Green Label certification.

The environmentally-friendly aspect of Nano-G Hospital-grade Nanotechnology 4th Generation Waterproofing solution has successfully gained approval from the Singapore Environmental Council (SEC), which simultaneously represents recognition from the Global Ecolabelling Network.

This green certification is one of the key factors that lead to Nano-G being selected as the appointed waterproofing specialist for all government hospitals across Malaysia. On top of the solution’s safe-if-inhaled and low VOC properties, Nano-G’s non-disruptive waterproofing methods allow hospital employees and patients to carry on with their day-to-day operations and routines.

Nano-G Recognized as Eco-Friendly Solution

Our waterproofing solution is eco-friendly and human-safe to ensure the health and safety of our staffs and consumers during and after application.

Browse through our Past Projects to see the hospitals that use Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing!

4. Nanotechnology coating is high breathability and non-film-forming.

Nano-G’s formula does not create a “plastic film” on the treated surface. Instead, the solution has the same viscosity as water, is invisible and odourless, and creates water-repelling protection from the inside out of the treated surface through deep penetration of the hydrophobic nanoparticles into the pores of the substrates. Since this treatment does not seal the pores, it eliminates any chances of trapped moisture or humidity from beneath or behind the treated surface – and allows moisture to evaporate  through the open pores to relieve negative capillary pressure. In this manner, swelling and cracking of treated surfaces are prevented.

Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing solution penetrates treated surfaces to create a hydrophobic layer inside out.

Nano-G-Non-Breathable-Waterproofing Coating Causes Trapped Moisture

Non-breathable waterproofing coatings are thick, separate layers applied on top of existing floors. That means trapped moisture are unable to evaporate through the layer, and will instead build up pressure beneath the film – eventually causing bubbling and peeling to occur.

5. Long-lasting, UV-resistant and withstands harsh weather.

Modified surfaces that are treated with Nano-G Hospital-grade Nanotechnology 4th Generation Waterproofing solution are resistant to abrasion, deterioration, or mechanical wear. The modified surfaces are also more resistant to UV radiation damage from the Sun and do not turn yellow over time. These factors combine to demonstrate that treated surfaces exhibit prolonged durability against various weathering and human-use damages.

Nano-G's Waterproofing Solution UV-Resistant

Nano-G Nanotechnology is a long-lasting waterproofing solution that protects your premise against damages from rain and harmful UV rays.

Nano-G The Superior Choice of Water Leakage Specialist For Homes & Commercial

Why Nano-G Is The Superior Choice of Water Leakage Specialist For Homes & Commercial

One of the key differentiating factors of Nano-G compared to competitors is its usage of advanced nanotechnology that is eco-friendly with a high success rate.

What is Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing?

At Nano-G, we use an advanced nanotechnology solution to prevent and solve water leakage problems. This nanotechnology solution is an eco-friendly, transparent, and odourless hydrophobic solution that is applied over surfaces or grouts. Due to the nano-scale of the molecules, Nano-G’s solution effectively penetrates up to 3cm deep into the pores or hairline cracks of the surfaces, thus fortifying the treated surfaces with a hydrophobic layer from the inside out. As a result, no water molecule is able to penetrate surfaces treated with Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing which makes it the best option for homes and commercial.

Leveraging scientific breakthroughs have rendered hacking and drilling work unnecessary. For many years, we have encountered customers who regret the intrusive, noisy, and messy renovation processes of conventional waterproofing methods – completely oblivious to the fact that a better solution exists with Nano-G. These customers also risk losing their money to the contractors since the result is not 100% guaranteed!

On the contrary, our waterproofing processes allow us to fortify your floors, walls, and rooves inside your homes and commercial building. With absolutely no health and safety hazards in terms of dust, noise, or corrosive chemicals, Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing is 100% hassle-free and requires less than 48 hours to complete.

Too good to be true? Here’s an article we’ve written to explain the difference in processes of hacking vs. no-hacking waterproofing methods that compare various waterproofing alternatives in the market.

Nano-G Hacking or Non-hacking Waterproofing Solutions

Having said that, here are SIX (6) reasons to engage us as your water leakage specialist – to save you from the headaches of trial and error with various non-expert contractors.

1. Nano-G is officially appointed by the Ministry of Health Malaysia to serve all government hospitals.

Our excellent workmanship and internationally-acclaimed nanotechnology waterproofing solution have made Nano-G the appointed water leakage specialist in all Malaysian government hospitals. 3. Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing solution is used in many countries with a proven track record.

Our solution is the exact same waterproofing solution used in Athens, Greece on The Onassis Cultural Center, The New Acropolis Museum, and The Monastiraki Square, due to its strong reputation for versatility in protecting, preserving, and restoring sensitive surfaces both indoors and outdoors. It is also being used in Norway, Japan, Italy, Norway, and many more.

The solution is especially effective against the detrimental effects of weathering in countries with four seasons, and Nano-G has made this level of resilience available in a tropical country like Malaysia. On top of keeping humidity from penetrating the surface, our solution is also used for stain resistance in high-traffic areas such as to protect the strips of unpolished white marble.

Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing Solution used the same Nanotechnology as The New Acropolis Museum

The primary advantage of waterproofing is that it helps protect the structure. Water damage can easily cause the maintenance cost of a structure to skyrocket. Modern structures need to be waterproofed to last more than a few years. One of the most renowned contemporary museums, The New Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece, used the same nanotechnology as ours to waterproof the structure of the building.

Nano-G Nanotechnology is a professional weatherproof waterproofing that helps to repels oil and any liquid particles into structure surface

Nano-G Nanotechnology waterproofing layers can defend against the weathering threats of UV rays and continuous fluctuation in humidity – preventing cracks in the homes and commercial building structure and water leakage issues that follow.

Nano-G What To Do When Water Is Leaking From The Apartment Unit Above Yours

What To Do When Water Is Leaking From The Apartment Unit Above Yours?

Who should take responsibility for a water leakage problem in a condominium, apartment, or flat unit? Read this article for the right course of action if you’re facing a water leakage from the unit upstairs.

The legal term for this particular problem we’re discussing in this article is “inter-floor leakage” – which is described as water damage to your ceiling. The Strata Management (Maintenance & Management) Regulations 2015 defines this water damage as any evidence of moisture, dampness, or water penetration on your ceiling or the materials that make up your ceiling (Regulation 55).

Inter-floor leakage is particularly difficult to navigate since the root cause of the leakage happens to be in an upstairs unit that belongs to someone else! On top of having to deal with your neighbour above, you may also have to deal with many more stakeholders such as the management of the condominium, contractors, developers, and possibly even legal offices if worse comes to worst.

Fortunately, staying informed can save you a lot of time and unnecessary back-and-forth communication with various parties – and we’re here to equip you with the right knowledge.

Did you know?

Water leakage is one of the most common problems in buildings, new or old – and conflict between unit owners can escalate when they refuse to give in to rectify the problem. Thus, Nano-G advises every new condominium or apartment owner to waterproof their unit before moving in to ensure double protection and prevent leakage in the next few years.

Now let’s get started on the important bits.

If the unit above yours is the one with the leakage issue, but your unit is the one suffering from the water damages (eg. flooding warping, mold, water damages, etc.), but the owner just refuses to rectify the issue.

1. Make an official complaint to the condominium management (CM)

This move applies if you live in a condominium or an apartment that has its own management office. Following the Strata Management (Maintenance and Management Regulation 2015), you have the right to file an official notice to the management of the building to request an inspection.

The management is then required to perform an inspection within 7 days after you file the notice. They should then issue a certificate of inspection within 5 days after conducting the inspection to identify the cause of the leak and the party responsible for fixing the leakage. If your unit is a new one and is within the defect liability period or still under warranty, you can lodge a complaint to the developer.

2. What if the owner of the unit above refuses to let the management carry out the inspection?

By law, the owner is required to cooperate, or else they could be fined up to RM50,000, jailed for 3 years, or both. In fact, if there is a risk of property damage and/or a likelihood of endangering someone’s life due to the water leakage problem, the management of the building is allowed to enter by force.

3. How soon should the unit owner get contractors to start repairs?

Repair works should start 7 days after the release of the certification of inspection by the management. If the unit owner has failed or refused to fix the water leakage, the management or the joint management body is to immediately take all necessary measures to rectify the inter-floor leakage. They will then charge and recover all costs and expenses from the owner of the unit.

4. From whom do I claim the reimbursement for the damages on my unit?

If you bought a recently developed condominium, SOHO, or apartment unit and it is still under the defect liability period, you can actually make a claim from the developer.

If your unit is no longer covered by the defect liability period, and the damages you have suffered are caused by water leakage from the unit above you, you can claim reimbursements from the owner. Of course – it is easier said than done. Thus, you can claim the reimbursements from the management of the building, and they will then proceed to claim from your neighbour upstairs.

Nano-G Waterproofing for Concrete Slab Roofs

Waterproofing Concrete Flat Roofs – For Homes and Buildings

Understanding how flat roofs are built can help you identify the best methods for waterproofing them.

Concrete flat roofs are increasingly becoming popular in building designs for both homes and commercial development due to their additional spaces that can be used for utilities (eg. water tanks, pumps, antennas, motor rooms, etc.) and recreation facilities (swimming pools, open decks, etc.). Unfortunately, flat roofs also cause big problems to homeowners and building managers – all of which stem from waterproofing issues.

It is this very reason that flat roofs are no longer allowed to be built on new government buildings.

Identifying the right waterproofing method is not as easy as one thinks; we must first have a basic understanding of how flat roofs are constructed.

1. The base of flat roofs is mainly constructed with concrete slabs.
2. Once the base is constructed, contractors then proceed to install waterproofing and heat insulation materials on top of these concrete slabs.
3. Then, a 5cm thick layer of cement screed is applied over the materials to protect them against the harsh Malaysian weather.
4. Finally, control joints on the cement screed are cut and sealed with elastic bitumen or sealant to guard against cracks.

What is Water Ponding?

Left unmanaged, water ponding causes expensive damage to buildings that may have extensive consequences.

With this info in mind, let’s take a look at some of the obvious and not-so-obvious technical pitfalls of flat roofs in homes and buildings.

Visible ProblemsInvisible Problems
1. Bad Workmanship
Poorly designed flat roofs without adequate drainage or even surfaces lead to water pooling on the flat roofs.
1. Water Ingress
Flat roofs leak over time because buildings deteriorate over time. In the event of damage, the building is more susceptible to water penetration as the concrete or cement breaks down from sun and rain damage and erosion.
2. Ponding
The formation of puddles on flat roofs is referred to as pooling, and it causes mould and weeds to grow in the drainage and cracks.
2. Heavier Dead Load of Building
This causes the concrete decks of the building to deform, deflect, and crack under pressure.
3. Accumulation of Dirt
Without slanted roofs for dirt and leaves to fall onto the ground below, flat roofs encourage unsightly depositions of small and large debris that can obstruct drainage if not properly cleaned and maintained.
3. Sharp Temperature Fluctuations
The average temperature on a flat roof in Malaysia is 82°C at 1.30 pm and 17°C at 4.00 am. This sharp fluctuation causes intense stress to the flat roofs due to heat-induced expansions and contractions, accelerating wear and tear.
4. Slip Hazard
Under wet climates or rainy seasons, flat roofs are slip hazards to people.
Let Nano-G Help You Waterproofing Your Building

Drainage systems may look simple, but require complex calculations for them to be effective and safe for residents of the building.

So, what should you be looking for in sourcing the best waterproofing system to use for concrete flat roofs?

Homeowners and building managers are looking into alternatives for waterproofing their flat roofs due to the intrusive, noisy, messy, and costly nature of hacking up and replacing the existing cement screed and other components.

Thus, coatings and membranes have become the preferred waterproofing method due to their ease of installation.

However, convenience aside – homeowners and building managers must also take into consideration the following factors when evaluating the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of their preferred waterproofing method for concrete flat roofs:

1. The waterproofing method should accommodate the unique degradation mechanisms of your existing building.
2. The initial acquisition costs and life-cycle costs must be accounted for.
3. The contractors involved should have control over the quality of the materials and detailing to ensure optimal performance of the outcome.

Nano-G Landed House Waterproofing

Effective Nanotechnology Waterproofing for Landed Homes

Did you know that it’s not just the bathrooms and toilets of a home that need to be waterproofed?

Settling down in a nice landed property is the dream for many. It’s not an easy goal to reach- but you’ve done it! Still, we find that many homeowners should take into account that there are some extra preventative measures they can take to keep their property looking good and free from wear-and-tear damage for longer, including waterproofing their landed home.

Nano-G Landed House Water Leakage Issue

We hear you KB! It gets very frustrating when a new home we move into has water leakage issues.

Here are 4 areas at landed home that need waterproofing!

1. Bathrooms are the cause of most water damage issues at home.

First-floor bathrooms and toilets are a common site for waterproofing issues indoors as they get wet regularly. Without proper bathroom ventilation, moisture from a shower will collect and seep into your grouts! If you’re unlucky, these wet grouts will develop cracks, letting water droplets eventually break through the ceiling below. By the time you notice a leakage problem, your wall or ceiling would have yellow stains.

Nano-G Waterproofing Bathroom Leak

Some telltale signs of water damage in your home can be seen from mould build up in the corners of your bathroom! Grimey and slimy grouts are difficult to clean because of how deeply the bacteria, mould, and other microbes have seeped into the concrete.

2. Your balcony is at risk of water damage!

Water leakage issues that happen from balcony areas are likely to cause chipping paint on your ceilings and walls. These issues are likely to spread from the balcony to the car porch area, too.  It should be noted that both concrete or wooden balconies in humid or rainy environments are at higher risk of damage in humid or rainy environments, as they are exposed to water for longer.

Your balcony should have a drainage system that keeps water from pooling into a pond. Unfortunately, these drainage systems are likely to get clogged with grime, mould, or dirt. Pressure from this pool of dirty water would cause hairline cracks to form on your balcony, allowing water to seep through to the ceiling or wall below.

Nano-G Waterproofing Flat Roof and Balcony Leaking

DJ Chan Fong is planning ahead when it comes to preparing his landed property for Malaysia’s rainy and humid weather. In providing the balcony with an additional Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing layer, he’s keeping the grouts in his landed home safe from stains, microbial growth, and more.

However, you can prevent this by making sure your wooden or tiled balcony areas are properly waterproofed. Nano-G recommends homeowners use our Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing solution as it doesn’t affect the appearance of their balcony tiles while keeping them easy-to-maintain. Our clear, hydrophobic solution makes it difficult for grime, or unwanted microbial organisms from latching on and spreading on the surface.

3. Concrete flat roofs are known to pool water and cause water leakage issues on the ceilings below.

Uneven surfaces collect still water, causing hairline cracks to form from the pressure over time. As a homeowner, you may see this often near air-con outdoor unit areas or at the water reserve tank area. These areas are prone to dampness and are likely to influence water leakage to occur over time.

Nano-G Landed House Water Leakage Issue

Many homeowners will see water damage issues at their car porch area, they will notice that a puddle of water has formed somewhere that is covered. This is often a result of the roof above, or water had seeped through in the gutters or drainage corners. By choosing to keep your home in tip-top shape, you keep your home looking as new as the day you bought it for longer.

Notice your concrete flat roof leaking and growing black with mould? It’s time to give your roofs a thorough cleanse and waterproofing with Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing. On top of removing built-up dirt, mould, and grime in your rood, we provide an additional service of painting an extra protective coating too. This service is available upon request.

4. Your home’s exterior walls are likely to get weather damaged, too.

Home may provide a safe shelter for us from heavy rains and hot suns- but they need maintenance and protection too. As your home ages, you might have noticed that its exterior walls have become stained with rain, dirt, and dust. A lot of times they accumulate in places that are hard to reach and clean by hand.

Nano-G Exterior Wall Waterproofing

When it comes to providing homeowners with the best nanotechnology waterproofing solution in the market, Nano-G is your go-to expert.

It’s not enough to just use regular house paint on these exterior walls. By applying a proper waterproofing layer, dirt, dust and chrome can easily be cleaned by the rain. This is especially helpful with Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing, our solution that creates a strong coating around your exterior walls that shields the surfaces of landed home from the environment.

5. Your swimming pool area is not safe from water damage, either!

Pools are a great feature to add to your home. They give family and visitors a fun activity to do on weekends, but they can also become a source of headache if not thoroughly maintained. It should be noted that it’s not only the inside of the swimming pool itself that needs to be waterproofed but also the surrounding swim deck. Not only is the swim deck constantly wet, but the swim deck is also at risk of deteriorating from the chemicals from the water too, creating cracks that reach the swimming pool underground. As you can imagine, this waterproofing failure goes unseen.

Nano-G Waterproofing Swimming Pool Issue

Prevention is better than renovation. Badly planned swimming pools are at risk of waterproofing failure. A good practice from homeowners is to thoroughly waterproof their swimming pool decks, tiles and drains with a waterproofing solution that lasts.

Luckily for you, our experts offer Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing services anywhere in the home. Our powerful nanotechnology solution is suitable for use on most surfaces that come into contact with water often. After inspecting your premise, we help plan and apply the solution near swimming pool areas at risk of waterproofing failure or damage over time.

Nano-G Is Your Condo or Apartment Facing Water Leakage Issues?

Is Your Condo or Apartment Facing Water Leakage Issues?

A water leakage complaint from a downstairs neighbour can come as a surprise. So it’s best to act fast to maintain the peace and solve the issue before it gets worse!

When living in a high-rise building that houses many units all at once, the time will come when you get notified about a persistent water leakage coming from your condo. For some, it may come as early as the first few months or a few years after moving into a house. Either way, your downstairs neighbour might not be too happy about the situation and it’s best to find a way to get your water leakage issue fixed!

Here are 3 quick solutions you can use to waterproof your apartment or condo.

1. PU injections for a quick bandaid fix- if your neighbour agrees to it, of course.

This conventional waterproofing method will have a contractor pumping in chemicals into the ceiling of the affected floor! As you wait for the solution to dry, expect it to leak and splatter from these cracks.

PU injections are a waterproofing method that drills a line of holes on the ceiling that will be filled up with an expanding Polyurethane foam. While it might not be a hacking method, it still requires drilling, repainting, and the use of a loud mix-and-pump motor.

Because the contractor needs to first find the problem area, they will have to look at the leaking ceiling in question. So you will have to coordinate with your downstairs neighbour to allow contractors into their home.

By the way, your neighbour should be reminded that this method might lead to a lot of fine dust and noise during the drilling process! Imagine this: your upstairs condo neighbour is probably very frustrated about the water leakage issue and just wants some peace. If you introduce a noisy, messy, and dirty procedure to their home, that they have to schedule by themselves- it could escalate the issue! It’s much better if you can waterproof your bathroom without troubling your neighbours.

2. Epoxy waterproofing for a thick, waterproofing layer- that changes the overall look of your bathroom floor’s surface.

Laying down epoxy waterproofing coatings takes an experienced hand and special safety equipment to make sure the layer is even and covers the floor thoroughly. As you can see, it will change the overall look of the floor below.

You might get recommendations from friends to let contractors use the epoxy waterproofing methods on your floors. This technique coats the entire floor from wall to wall into one big layer that usually has a design. Because of its wide coverage, it’s a popular technique used in low-cost homes, public toilets and even car park areas.

This waterproofing method, however, will change the whole look of your bathroom or toilet. Because of the way it is applied and dried, the coating is irreversible after application.

Not to mention, some service providers might choose to first sand your perfectly fine tiled floors to create a rough surface. Some solutions require a very specific profile that allows the epoxy to properly bind and stay on the floor. So, expect your expensive tiles to get thoroughly scratched and damaged!

Nano-G Hacking or No Hacking Waterproofing Solutions

Should I Use a Hacking or No-Hacking Waterproofing Method for Water Leaking Issues?

Looking for a quick fix to your waterproofing issues but a little confused on how different methods may benefit your home, business, or office? Here is a simple explainer on hacking or no-hacking waterproofing solutions.

As a property owner, looking for waterproofing fixes can be quite stressful! You might be wondering “How many off days do I have to sacrifice for a full renovation of my leaking bathroom?”, “If I take on a no-hacking service, will it be just as effective?”, or “Which is the best solution for my home, office, or business, really?”

First and foremost, what is the difference between Hacking and No-Hacking waterproofing?

Hacking waterproofing requires the contractor to hammer, or knock at your flooring to fix water leakage issues. The contractor will usually be required to hack out your tiles and failed waterproofing membranes to reapply a new waterproofing solution. Once the solution is fully dried, a new concrete screed is to be applied before the new tiles are laid down on top of it. While hacking methods really do help renew your property’s structural waterproofing, this is a very noisy and dusty process!

Perfectly fine tiles have to be cracked and scraped off your surfaces during the hacking process. If you aren’t willing to let your nice bathroom tiles go to waste, hacking waterproofing should be your last resort!

Many homeowners realise too late that their homes remain dusty even after a thorough cleaning. On top of the mess, you may not be able to actually use your bathroom, balcony, or kitchen during the days or weeks it takes for the solutions to completely dry. That is why we only recommend hacking methods as the last resort when no-hacking methods have failed. Discomfort aside, the micro-dust particles in the air and on surfaces are quite hazardous for loved ones with asthma or other respiratory issues.

Hacking waterproofing is a form of renovation work that requires your contractor to knock open your flooring to solve issues. Oftentimes, this method leaves the home in a big dusty mess that gets into hard-to-reach corners, bedding materials, clothes, and more.

On the other hand, no-hacking waterproofing methods are less invasive. One example of an effective no-hacking method is Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing. Our solution deals directly with hairline cracks that cause water seepage issues in your bathroom, kitchen, balcony, or even car porch. We use an innovative nanotechnology waterproofing solution that penetrates deep into surfaces, providing grouts and flat roofs hydrophobic protection that prevents water from getting absorbed into the concrete. The Greek technology we use to create our solution has been certified by the world’s most stringent environmental standards from the ISO and the Singapore Green Labeling Scheme. To add to that, we are appointed by the Ministry of Health (MOH) as the go-to experts in waterproofing maintenance and rectification for government hospitals nationwide.

We recommend homeowners only resort to hacking waterproofing when they plan on renovating their entire bathroom, balcony, or kitchen floor. This is especially the case for older buildings, as these ageing structures may not be able to handle the force caused during operations.

Figuring out what’s really causing your water leak is the first step to determining if you should choose a hacking or no-hacking method. Read up on how to tell the difference between a broken pipe or a hairline crack!

Rubber Waterproofing Paint VS Nanotechnology Waterproofing

Read This Before Using Rubber Waterproofing Paint

What is this paint-on method, and how does it compare to Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing?

Having a persistent water leakage problem on your flat roof can be very stressful when you don’t know anyone to help you fix them. It doesn’t help that in this age of choice, you’re flooded with so many waterproofing options in the market. If you’ve stumbled on this article, you must be curious about what rubber waterproofing is, and if it’s suitable for your home. Rubber waterproofing paint, also known as elastomeric waterproofing paint, is made of liquified oil, latex, or rubber to be applied on a surface as a spray, or paint. For more structure, a fibre texture layer is added between paint layers to double down on its waterproofing qualities.

At its core, this paint-on method seems fairly straight forward – you only need the rubber paint and a brush! It is a budget choice for waterproofing work, but budget choices often come at a cost.

1. Poor workmanship leads to rubber paint peeling and bubbling over time.

A quality job well done by a contractor is not just by popping open a liquified rubber paint tin, dipping in a brush, and painting absentmindedly. It takes a level of clear understanding of the material to pull it off. This can range from how diluted the liquid rubber should be when applied on the surface, and how many layers does it take to give your surfaces the waterproof seal it needs to prevent water from seeping through. If the rubber material is too little or painted on unevenly, your new rubber surface will start to peel or bubble after a year. Some companies have opted to have a layer of PU coating on the surface after applying the rubber paint to more securely prevent leaks.

That’s why it’s so important for your contractors to be experienced in surface area prep for both outdoor or indoor settings. This ranges from predicting how the weather might affect the outdoor work area, to how to deal with hidden moisture in concrete. Not only that, the surface must be clear of dust and debris. Bad preparation can lead to vapour build up under the rubber waterproofing layer and clumpy paint application.

We guarantee that Nano-G’s on-site waterproofing team is properly trained with the right way of applying our nanotechnology waterproofing solution. Instead of blindly guessing if the surface is ready to be treated we follow a strict protocol when doing on-site work to ensure our solution is applied in the most effective way.

2. Rubber waterproofing paint will not seep into hairline cracks.

Rubber waterproofing paint is able to cover large surfaces but they don’t actually seep into hairline cracks. While the consistency of rubber paint varies according to each service provider, at its core, the paint is very thick. You could have extra support from an additional textured fibre layer, but it’s not as effective as plugging up the problem areas. So, they aren’t a good replacement for other conventional methods.

In our past articles, we’ve looked into how other waterproofing methods work and what to expect when their contractors enter your home.

Instead of just being a separate layer sitting on top of surfaces, Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing is a solution that seeps deep into hairline cracks to tackle water leakage problems at the nanoscale. In our past projects, our solution has been effective on indoor and outdoor grouts of bathrooms or balconies, and flat roofs.

3. Rubber waterproofing paint has a long curing time to completely dry during humid weather.

Another thing homeowners have to take into account is that rubber waterproofing takes quite some time to solidify into a hard protective layer. It’s advisable (and a common practice) for contractors to build the thickness of the material through at least 3 layers of paint. Monitoring the drying of rubber paint can get quite tedious with Malaysia’s weather, given that a sunny hot afternoon can turn into a thunderstorm at any given moment.

What’s more, basic rubber waterproofing paint releases a very obvious smell during and even after dry time. While paint used by different contractors vary according to the company they work under, it’s best to prepare yourself for a few hours- even days- of breathing in paint fumes.

We can’t deny that any on-site operation will create smells that interfere with your day. Still, we can guarantee that our operation wouldn’t release harmful and toxic fumes that put your loved ones at risk if inhaled. So, your family can still be in the house while Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing is being applied!

To get a rough estimate of how long our solution would dry in your home, it’s best for you to talk with our customer service team or the Nano-G Waterproofing Expert during your FREE first inspection! You can find our contact details at the bottom of this article.

4. It’s difficult to correct application mistakes.

Unfortunately, sometimes mistakes happen during the paint application process that leads to clumping, bubbling, or peeling. It’s especially a pain to deal with when it comes to higher grade paints. As it’s designed to really stay solid on surfaces, this means that it may take some hacking or chemical treatments to remove. In fact, rubber coatings are seen as one of the most difficult to remove coating in the industry. This means your rubberised surface will have to go through a costly hacking and grinding , or even water blasting service to effectively remove and reapply a new waterproofing layer.

We’re proud to say that Nano-G Waterproofing Experts carry their on-site work in a well-disciplined and professional manner to keep mistakes at a minimum. However, in the event that mistakes do happen, it wouldn’t require a noisy or chemical-heavy process to effectively remove.

Nanotechnology Waterproofing is safe and chemical-free

Still, the decision you make for the most suitable waterproofing method to fix your water leakage in your home, business, or commercial building is up to you. While we do recognise that every company has their own in-house brand of rubber waterproofing paint, they may share some of the shortcomings as listed in this article. Therefore, it’s important for you to be prepared when problems do arise after your service.

Alternatively, Nano-G delivers a satisfaction and money-back guaranteed service with our nanotechnology waterproofing solution.

Our knowledge on conventional methods is not just based on our years of experience in the industry, it’s also based on what our clients have experienced before coming to us as the last resort when other methods have failed.

Torch-On Membrane VS Nanotechnology Waterproofing

Things You Need To Know Before Choosing Torch-on Membranes Waterproofing Solutions To Solve Your Leakage Problems

The differences between this fire-based solution and Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing solution.

Looking for a sustainable way to waterproof your property? When researching for methods, you are likely to come across the “Torch-On Membrane” method. While common practice for flat roofs, there are some precautions developers and homeowners have to bear in mind when it comes to this petroleum-based waterproofing solution.

The two most common Torch-On Membranes in the market are known as Atactic Polypropylene Plastic modified Bitumen (APP), and Styrene Butadiene Styrene modified bitumen (SBS). Both are heat-sensitive materials that are widely used internationally to cover flat roofs, floorings, car porch, and balcony areas.

How it works

The application of Torch-On Membranes involves two main layers to work, the substrate layer laid out on the surface and the thermofusible film of the membrane itself. The thermofusible film is a type of hot-melt plastic adhesive.  Essentially, the torch on membrane is supposed to create a barrier on top of the surface of the leakage problem to keep water from seeping through. However, poor workmanship can lead to these membranes to not work as intended.

There are also more downsides to the method that we feel the need to point out.

1. Poor workmanship leads to membrane failures and debonding.

The whole process isn’t just a simple blowtorch-and-roll procedure based on instinct. In fact, this method requires strict SOPs. This ranges from the heat of the blowtorch, to the way the membrane overlaps, to the speed or position the membrane is at when rolled out.

Seam failure can be seen by too much overflow of the adhesive at overlapping parts of two membranes.

Ideally, the amount of fluid that spreads out from the overlapped parts must be between 1-2.5cm. If too little of the heat-fusible side has not been melted, you can experience membrane failure in the future. That’s why it’s hard to make sure that the membrane has been properly melted, even if handled by an expert!

2. The Torch-On Membrane is not suitable for all surfaces.

Torch-On Membranes are reserved for surfaces that are resistant to heat, such as concrete. This technique requires the contractor to work with a blowtorch! Therefore, it is not advisable to be used on flammable surfaces such as wood or insulation boards.

Poor judgement calls from the technician may lead to costly damages to your property.

Homeowners should bear in mind that Torch-On Membrane methods are reserved for wide outdoor areas, such as on commercial building flat roofs, outdoor car parks, and car porches. Even so, extreme caution must be observed when working around electrical or gas connection systems, such as AC outdoor units, electric boxes, and near plastic water tanks (tangki). This is because these areas are susceptible to heat and may get damaged, causing problems in the future.

3. Torch-On Membranes release harmful and toxic gas into the air and are not environmentally sustainable.

There’s a reason why this method is reserved for outdoor or open-air areas. Alongside the fire hazard that comes with using a blow torch, this method releases harmful chemicals into the air. Some websites might try to push that their solutions are sustainable and non-toxic, but they are still using petroleum-based materials!

The torch is used to heat up both the substrate laid out on the floor, and the petroleum-based adhesive side of the membrane.

According to a paper by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), asphalt fumes generated from the torching process releases carcinogenic particles. Due to long exposure, these particles can increase cancer risk in people. Not to mention, after the installation process, the smell of burning rubber may last for a good few days!

4. Uneven or damp surfaces leads to Torch-On Membranes debonding.

Debonding is the process that happens when the membrane lifts, peels or bubbles after a period of time. Unfortunately, several factors can cause debonding and they are usually a result of errors during the application stage.

Video credit: The Council for Sustainable Building Practices via YouTube

Namely, some of the main factors that cause debonding are damp, uneven, or poorly primed surfaces.

Your Torch-On membrane might debond due to your contractor using the wrong membrane that doesn’t work well with the substrate they choose from your floors, the surface of your floor being damp from the leakage problem, uneven, poorly primed, or contaminated surfaces! What’s worse, you wouldn’t notice if the waterproofing membrane was damaged until it starts leaking when it’s placed someplace you don’t visit often!

5. The surface of the membrane is likely to pool water.

On flat roofs, be prepared to notice that there may be unevenness on the membrane due to an uneven surface. These dips on the surface are likely to cause water to pool, creating a water ponding problem.

This will both deteriorate the membrane, as well as become a breeding ground for bacterial and mould growth. Scrubbing or power-washing the floor wouldn’t be as easy to clear off on a concrete surface.

Nanotechnology vs PU Injection

Everything You Need to Know about PU Injections to Solve Your Leakage Problem

The differences between this drill, pump, seal method and Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing.

Hairline cracks in concrete are usually the main causes of water leakage problems at home and in commercial buildings.

One common waterproofing technique used is the PU injection (a.k.a Polyurethane Injection), a conventional hacking method. Contractors using PU Injections usually drill a hole into the problem area, where the PU is then pumped into the hole. The chemical composition in the injection is then triggered to expand and fill up the walls or ceiling, blindly covering the whole area in hopes of filling in these hairline cracks.

Think of it like this: PU is made of the same spongy material found in chair cushions. The chemicals used in PU injections are broken up into two separate solutions to be mixed together before pouring the material into a pump machine. Then, it is pumped into the ceiling as the PU begins to react and expand.

Websites and social media like to advertise this method misleadingly- with claims that their in-house method requires no hacking, is fast-drying and has a clean operation throughout!

X company is advertising a promise for a toxic-free, hack-free, and fast PU Injection service. But our experience as waterproofing experts tells us that X might be stretching the truth!

Here’s a quick comparison of conventional PU Injection methods and Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing. However, when looking into common practices done by most contractors- their claims just don’t match.

pu injection and waterproofing comparison

1. No hacking required, but DRILLING is required!

Despite not being a hacking method, PU Injections still require holes or scrapes to be made to the wall or ceiling. Drilling creates as much, if not more, noise and fine dust than hammering and hacking. Just for your understanding, the first thing a contractor learns when working on PU Injections is how to drill a hole into the affected area. More specifically, it’s to learn how to drill in a 45° angled hole through the suspected crack area to be filled in with PU later on.

We should also mention that the method in question we’re talking about isn’t the PU materials you can get in your local DIY shop. The chemicals used in this process have to be handled using heavy duty machines that mix up the chemicals before filling up the hole, where it should expand into.

Nano-G strongly believes that hacking methods should only be used as the last resort by any home or business owner for their premises. That’s why Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing is done without the need for any hacking or drilling! Instead, we developed our solution to be able to seep into the thinnest of hairline cracks on any surface, filling up and protecting the layer from any further damage.

2. It can take a long time to complete the repair.

The thing about the PU Injection method is that it is a long process of drilling, grouting, sealing and cleaning. Add in some unforeseen issues and the entire process will take some time and patching up to complete. After the drilling, the contractor will use a high-pressure injection grouting machine that injects the polyurethane into the hole. This is when you will notice the excessive polyurethane dripping downwards from the hole.

If there are no more leaks, the contractor will proceed to clean up and properly seal the injected area. Our previous clients remarked that the spilled and solidified polyurethane were left there for up to 2 WEEKS before they were properly removed and cleaned up. In between the 2 weeks period, they noticed a recurring wet spot, resulting in them having to drill and inject the problem area again. Unfortunately, the wet spot can be a result of heavy rains or poor workmanship. If you’re unlucky a poorly done PU Injection can lead to a recurring water leakage that lasts for MONTHS even after repeated patching.

As a home or business owner, you need to ask yourself: Do I really want my ceilings looking like this?

Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing solution, however, does not require any drilling and only takes about 24-48 hours to complete. This includes the work area preparation stage, application of the solutions, drying time and cleaning up.

3. Polyurethane is a known respiratory toxin.

Homeowners have to take note that Polyurethane is a petroleum-based method that can release harmful gas into the air as it is being applied. In fact, exposure to fumes from wet Polyurethane is known to provoke asthma and cause other issues to the throat, eyes, and skin and is definitely not safe around young children.

Four of the harmful chemicals found in PU Injections.

Instead of creating a health hazard for our clients, Nano-G ensures that our work materials are safe for your home, office, or business. This is because our nanotechnology waterproofing solution is a non-toxic material that doesn’t emit strong-smelling and hazardous chemicals. Therefore, you can still be present during our operation to have a look at what we do!

Take a look at what Nano-G’s previous clients have to say about our on-site services, here!

4. It’s messy, dirty and needs a thorough cleaning.

Not only will you be dealing with the harmful fumes, drilling noises, and unsightly drying times, you will also have to deal with the possibility that there will be stains that you can’t clean! PU Injections tend to leave marks on the walls or ceilings that are quite noticeable when you first walk into the room. Imagine after all the hassle you had to go through when dealing with the process and you’re left with specks of paint all over your furniture!

Our clients remarked that the PU Injection method left their premises in a mess, and later had an issue where they were not able to match the ceiling paint of their home! Therefore , we recommend for homeowners to be present as the application is being done and be firm on cleanliness once on-site application is done.

Nano-G’s experts are disciplined when enforcing a special on-site SOP that keeps your premises always clean and tidy, while not causing too much noise when applying our nanotechnology waterproofing solution. This includes cleaning the work area before and after the operation, as well as a final inspection from our supervisor. If your water leakage problems aren’t fixed from our workmanship, our solutions come with a money-back guarantee! If you’re not satisfied, we’re not satisfied.

5. PU Injections are a bad idea for plaster ceilings.

In homes with plaster ceilings, homeowners should take note that your contractor will have to cut a hole into the plaster ceiling that is big enough for them to reach the concrete ceiling hidden above.

PU Injection are a bad idea for plaster ceilings

The whole process creates a lot of dust and debris, as well as a wide and long hole in the ceiling. What’s worse, most contractors will only patch up the area they had drilled or hacked open. In older homes, this issue is even more of an eyesore as the plaster around the crack must have already aged into a cream colour, making it very obvious that rectification work has been made.

With Nano-G, our solution doesn’t require us to cut a hole into your ceiling. We’d also like to mention that we were able to solve numerous water leakage issues that conventional waterproofing methods like the PU Injection couldn’t solve. Many of our clients have remarked that both our Nano-G Nanotechnology Waterproofing and on-site SOP were the hassle-free, hack-free, non-toxic and effective solution they have been looking for.

Have a look at what Mr Edward had to say about Nano-G’s onsite service in his testimonial!

After engaging with Nano-G’s services, I realised Nano-G’s staff were very fast and also very professional and did not disturb the mother’s and their babies’ rest. I am quite satisfied with Nano-G’s service. I give them a thumbs up.”

Nano-G New Bathroom

New Homeowners Should Waterproof Their Bathrooms

Here’s a tip: coat a layer of Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing on your bathroom grouts to prevent water leaking!

You’ve done it, after years of working hard and saving up, you’ve finally bought yourself a home. But before you go about your homemaking, as a new homeowner, ensuring your bathrooms are properly waterproofed should REALLY be part of your checklist. See, while all bathrooms are already waterproofed under the tiles, having a protective layer on your grout is important too. This is because the layer underneath your tiles, called a waterproofing membrane, might have some defects that you don’t notice! So, take the proactive step to safeguard your bathroom with waterproofing for the utmost peace of mind.

A forum discussion on waterproofing issues in new homes
For my_nickleo, his new bathroom’s waterproofing membrane wasn’t working AND he had to deal with a difficult developer! As a homeowner to a new or second-hand property, you should know that you are entitled to a warranty for any structural defects you find. Always take photos of these problems as you see them!

That’s why doing a water ponding test is so important when you first move into your home.

What is a water ponding test? It’s a type of test for your bathroom floor to see if the waterproofing membrane underneath actually prevents water from seeping through and leaking into the ceiling below it. You wouldn’t want to one day be the upstairs neighbour that causes a water leaking issue to your downstairs neighbour, do you?

Still, even if your water ponding test has been a success- or even after you get your waterproofing membrane fixed by the developer, you’ll still have to think about possible water leakage issues in the future. This is because waterproofing membranes will break down over the years, as like any protective building material. And also, if not damaged, the space between your tiles (the grout) will build up unsightly bacteria and mould that just ruins your tilework!

It doesn’t matter how frequently you scrub or wash your bathroom- a stain, is a stain. And a non-waterproofed grout allows bacteria to penetrate into its pores overtime.

So, here are 3 reasons why you need a layer of Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing on your bathroom grouts.

1. It’s a preventative measure against future water leakage issues.

It’s not enough to just have a waterproofing membrane underneath your tiles- you need to make sure that the surface of your grouts is waterproofed as well. Most bathroom grouts use cement that is prone to hairline cracks. These cracks aren’t visible to the naked eye and can run very deep into the cement. When still water gets on it, it will seep through the cracks and leak into the floor below it.

With Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing, however, you don’t have to worry about water seeping into your grout. Our solution penetrates as deep as 3 cm into the grout and keeps the water droplets from seeping through.

Unfortunately with our humid Malaysian weather, our bathrooms tend to dry slower. This means that still water is likely to stay for longer, creating water pressure on the tiles that weaken the grout and waterproofing membrane over time! Eventually, water will seep through to the floor below it, causing water damage to the ceilings.

With Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing, however, you wouldn’t have to worry about your grouts absorbing water!

2. Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing prevents mould growth.

Hydrophobic materials are made to specifically not let water seep and spread on them.

Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing solution is so hydrophobic that it prevents water from seeping through hairline cracks in grouts! Instead, the water will stay on the surface and dry off more thoroughly. By having such a water-resistant surface, this prevents water from pooling or seeping in your bathroom grouts. Therefore, these areas become less susceptible for bacteria to build up and grow into mould that is difficult to clean! Of course, this doesn’t mean you don’t have to clean your bathroom floors, it’ll just take less scrubbing.

3. You maintain your property value over time.

Because of Nano-G’s extra protection against water leakages and mould growth, you’re able to maintain the value of your home for a longer time! The reason why property loses value over time is because of how much damage it gets from wear and tear. What’s more, you’re less likely to have to spend a lot of money on bathroom renovations to fix your water leakage issues using hacking methods. Which, unfortunately, don’t always work.

With Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing, you can keep your bathroom looking new for a long time!

Our tip to new homeowners is simple- waterproof your bathroom floor tiles to prevent water leakages and mould build-up. You’ll save a lot of money, as you wouldn’t need to spend it tirelessly trying to fix water leakage problems from the bathroom in the future.

You don’t even have to lift a finger or sacrifice a lot of your time to get it done! You simply need to set a date and time and we’ll send over our team of waterproofing experts to your home to apply our solution. It is a hack-free, dust-free and non-toxic operation that shouldn’t take longer than 24 hours to complete! What’s more, the material we use to waterproof your bathroom is made with nanotechnology, a material that’s so fine that it goes into the smallest pores on your tile and not create even the slightest change to the appearance of your tilework.

While you’re at it, coat a layer of Nano-G’s Anti-Slip Coating to keep your bathroom slip-proof as well. You’re making a home after all!
