Nano-G New Bathroom

New Homeowners Should Waterproof Their Bathrooms

Here’s a tip: coat a layer of Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing on your bathroom grouts to prevent water leaking!

You’ve done it, after years of working hard and saving up, you’ve finally bought yourself a home. But before you go about your homemaking, as a new homeowner, ensuring your bathrooms are properly waterproofed should REALLY be part of your checklist. See, while all bathrooms are already waterproofed under the tiles, having a protective layer on your grout is important too. This is because the layer underneath your tiles, called a waterproofing membrane, might have some defects that you don’t notice! So, take the proactive step to safeguard your bathroom with waterproofing for the utmost peace of mind.

A forum discussion on waterproofing issues in new homes
For my_nickleo, his new bathroom’s waterproofing membrane wasn’t working AND he had to deal with a difficult developer! As a homeowner to a new or second-hand property, you should know that you are entitled to a warranty for any structural defects you find. Always take photos of these problems as you see them!

That’s why doing a water ponding test is so important when you first move into your home.

What is a water ponding test? It’s a type of test for your bathroom floor to see if the waterproofing membrane underneath actually prevents water from seeping through and leaking into the ceiling below it. You wouldn’t want to one day be the upstairs neighbour that causes a water leaking issue to your downstairs neighbour, do you?

Still, even if your water ponding test has been a success- or even after you get your waterproofing membrane fixed by the developer, you’ll still have to think about possible water leakage issues in the future. This is because waterproofing membranes will break down over the years, as like any protective building material. And also, if not damaged, the space between your tiles (the grout) will build up unsightly bacteria and mould that just ruins your tilework!

It doesn’t matter how frequently you scrub or wash your bathroom- a stain, is a stain. And a non-waterproofed grout allows bacteria to penetrate into its pores overtime.

So, here are 3 reasons why you need a layer of Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing on your bathroom grouts.

1. It’s a preventative measure against future water leakage issues.

It’s not enough to just have a waterproofing membrane underneath your tiles- you need to make sure that the surface of your grouts is waterproofed as well. Most bathroom grouts use cement that is prone to hairline cracks. These cracks aren’t visible to the naked eye and can run very deep into the cement. When still water gets on it, it will seep through the cracks and leak into the floor below it.

With Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing, however, you don’t have to worry about water seeping into your grout. Our solution penetrates as deep as 3 cm into the grout and keeps the water droplets from seeping through.

Unfortunately with our humid Malaysian weather, our bathrooms tend to dry slower. This means that still water is likely to stay for longer, creating water pressure on the tiles that weaken the grout and waterproofing membrane over time! Eventually, water will seep through to the floor below it, causing water damage to the ceilings.

With Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing, however, you wouldn’t have to worry about your grouts absorbing water!

2. Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing prevents mould growth.

Hydrophobic materials are made to specifically not let water seep and spread on them.

Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing solution is so hydrophobic that it prevents water from seeping through hairline cracks in grouts! Instead, the water will stay on the surface and dry off more thoroughly. By having such a water-resistant surface, this prevents water from pooling or seeping in your bathroom grouts. Therefore, these areas become less susceptible for bacteria to build up and grow into mould that is difficult to clean! Of course, this doesn’t mean you don’t have to clean your bathroom floors, it’ll just take less scrubbing.

3. You maintain your property value over time.

Because of Nano-G’s extra protection against water leakages and mould growth, you’re able to maintain the value of your home for a longer time! The reason why property loses value over time is because of how much damage it gets from wear and tear. What’s more, you’re less likely to have to spend a lot of money on bathroom renovations to fix your water leakage issues using hacking methods. Which, unfortunately, don’t always work.

With Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Waterproofing, you can keep your bathroom looking new for a long time!

Click here to watch how YouTuber Jeff & Inthira choose Nano-G to waterproof their new bathroom

Our tip to new homeowners is simple- waterproof your bathroom floor tiles to prevent water leakages and mould build-up. You’ll save a lot of money, as you wouldn’t need to spend it tirelessly trying to fix water leakage problems from the bathroom in the future.

You don’t even have to lift a finger or sacrifice a lot of your time to get it done! You simply need to set a date and time and we’ll send over our team of waterproofing experts to your home to apply our solution. It is a hack-free, dust-free and non-toxic operation that shouldn’t take longer than 24 hours to complete! What’s more, the material we use to waterproof your bathroom is made with nanotechnology, a material that’s so fine that it goes into the smallest pores on your tile and not create even the slightest change to the appearance of your tilework.

While you’re at it, coat a layer of Nano-G’s Anti-Slip Coating to keep your bathroom slip-proof as well. You’re making a home after all!

Slip and Fall Prevention for Your Kitchen Staff

Keep your staff safe from workplace accidents!

Greasy floors in a busy kitchen at rush hour are a slip and fall accident waiting to happen, keep your workers safe and happy by applying anti-slip on your floors.

As a restaurant owner, you’re probably concerned about the health and safety of your kitchen staff during the lunch or dinner rush. Where food orders seem never-ending and everyone is moving quickly. It doesn’t help that throughout these shifts oil and food debris build-up on the floor and leave the floor greasy and slippery.

Video Credit: CNA via YouTube
In 2019, CNA reported that more than 50% of workplace slip and fall accidents happen in the kitchen and are 80% more likely to happen during peak hours.

Ways to keep your kitchen staff safe from slip and fall accidents

1. Lay down anti-slip rubber mats

Anti-slip maps create bevelled surfaces for you to walk on.

A common practice by restaurant owners in curbing the slip and fall issue is to lay down rubber anti-slip mats (much like in the photo above). However, anti-slip mats can accumulate debris over time, becoming slip and fall hazards on their own. This is because anti-slip mats are still just flat pieces of plastic on the ground that will give way even if the floor is oily or wet.

2. Equip your staff with safety shoes

These boots aren't made for slipping- so that's what they won't do! One of these days these boots will anti-slip your foot.

These shoes are different from your normal shoes because of the number of grooves it has on its sole.

Another way to keep your kitchen workplace safer is by having the dress code to include safety, also known as anti-slip, shoes. Anti-slip shoes manage to give the staff member more grip by providing the wearer more tact and grip when walking or crossing the floor. In fact, it is a common safety measure enforced by bigger restaurant chain owners who have staff members that move around a lot more.

Still, anti-slip mats and shoes don’t exactly tackle the problem of a greasy and slippery floor.

3. Coat a layer of Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution on your floors

Nano-G Anti-Slip Floor Coating provides friction on the surface without changing the appearance of the floor.

The key reason why your kitchen staff may slip and fall in the kitchen is because of the slippery and greasy floor, due to a lack of friction it provides. Even after the daily after-work scrubbing, the residual layer of food debris and oil will still remain on the floor surface.

Therefore, one good way to deal with the issue is to slip-proof the floor itself- and Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution is able to do just that. Our anti-slip floor coating solution doubles as an anti-microbial and waterproof layer that doesn’t get slippery even when water is splashed on it. It also has the added benefits of being easy to clean, easy to maintain and having a clear coat.

And you don’t have to stop a few days worth of work to have the kitchen slip-proofed! Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution ensures that the kitchen will be slip-proof in a matter of 24 hours. What’s more, you don’t have to hack at the kitchen floor or tiles. Instead, we will be coating a transparent and grainy anti-slip layer on your floor that doesn’t change the appearance of your kitchen floor.

Read more about Nano-G’s Anti-Slip Floor Coating solution here:

So, that’s why you need a long-term solution to prevent slip and falls in the restaurant kitchen.

By having a layer of Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution on your kitchen floor, you save a lot of hassle in keeping your kitchen safe. For one, you and your staff can rest assured that your anti-slip mat and shoes will work twice as effective with the added precaution of our solution, as our solution is embedded into the smallest pore of your kitchen floor.

Protect the Elderly From Slip and Fall Accidents at the Toilets

Worried about your elderly loved one falling while using the toilet? Slip-proof their floors!

Elderly adults are more prone to slip and fall accidents near the toilet. In fact, a 2018 study by the Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine found that 45% of hospital visits from the elderly are a result of slip and falls at home. Given their fragile bones, these falls can often have serious consequences, including fatalities. This emphasizes the need for effective anti-slip solution to safeguard the elderly in their homes especially their toilet.

In this panel discussion between doctors and nutritionists from Astro AEC’s Health 123 program, it was revealed that 25% of elderly adults above the age of 80 who fell and suffered a femoral fracture die within the year of falling down.

And honestly, critical slip and falls accidents are more common than you think, read more about it here: Fatal Slip and Fall Injuries in Malaysia are More Common Than you Think

That is why we need to take extra precautions for our elderly loved ones.

Ways to Slip-Proof the Elderly’s Toilets

1. Get to the root of the problem with Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating.

Nano-G Anti-Slip Coating on floor tiles
As you can see, our Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution creates micrograins on your floors that give your feet extra grit when walking around.

The main cause of slip and fall accidents are slippery floors. So, what you need is a coating option that creates micrograins on your flooring that keeps the floor from getting slippery when wet.

Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution ensures that the toilet will be slip-proof in a matter of 24 hours.  What’s more, you don’t have to hack at your walls, or tiles to install extra fixtures to slip-proof your toilet! Instead, we will be coating a transparent and grainy anti-slip layer on your floor that doesn’t change the appearance of your toilet floor.

Click this button to learn more about a long-term solution to making the toilet floors anti-slip and safer for your elderly loved one!

2. Fix grab bars near the toilet

Another reason why the elderly lose their balance when using the toilet is because of a lack of support when getting up or sitting down. If you’re unable to hire help to assist your elderly loved one, installing grab bars near the toilet AND slip-proofing your toilet floor is a good move to make.

And no, the sink, the toilet paper dispenser, or the toilet rack are not substitutes for a grab bar, as these fixtures are installed more superficially on the walls and are likely to give way if force was put on them.

A towel rack that gave way after force was put on it.

Now, imagine if your elderly loved one was holding on to it for support. They might just end up slipping and cutting themselves on that sharp, exposed end. The goal is to avoid a hospital visit, not create another potential accident.

3. Upgrade your squat toilet to a seated one

The older we get, the less strength we’re able to exert to support ourselves. It’s even more of an issue when lowering your full body into a squatting position over a damp toilet floor. That’s a slip and fall hazard just waiting to happen. And, even if they don’t slip, they may not be able to get up from the squatting position!

That’s why, if you have the means to, upgrade the squat toilet into a seated one for your elderly loved one’s convenience.

A further upgrade is to add an adjustable toilet seat to it, to further lessen the need to squat when using the toilet.

4. Use an anti-slip mat or tape

Another way you can keep your elderly loved one safe from a slip and fall accident is by laying down an anti-slip mat or by placing anti-slip tapes on parts of the toilet that are slip-prone, such as near the toilet bowl or near the door.

Some of our drying mats might even have been made from your grandma.

Still, they don’t directly deal with the issue of a slippery wet floor and will become a slip hazard on their own over time.

5. Declutter the toilet floor

A cluttered toilet floor can cause a slip and fall accident, whereby a stray brush or soap bar can be accidentally stepped on that makes the user skid on the surface. It can also cause additional injuries such as a bruised eye from falling on the handle of a toilet brush.

Oftentimes, our toilets are cluttered because we keep cleaning supplies and equipment around. So, as a general rule of thumb, avoid using the toilet as a storage room for your cleaning supplies or tools. That’s what cabinets and shelves are for!

But honestly, even with a neat toilet room with grab bars, a seated and adjustable toilet, and anti-slip mats and tape- you’re still not fixing the number one cause of slip and fall accidents: a slippery floor.

So, before doing heavy, and costly, renovations to your parent’s toilet, give Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution a go. For a lot of Nano-G’s past clients, the anti-slip solution was more than enough to keep their elderly family members from having slip and fall accidents.

5 Types of Waterproofing Solutions to Fix Water Leakages in Malaysia

Waterproofing your walls, ceilings, and flat roofs at home, in the office, or at your business to prevent black and yellow stains from getting worse.

Malaysian households and workplaces are prone to mouldy walls or ceilings, especially in landed homes, condominiums, and even shop lots, due to waterproofing failure.

A water leaking issue from the upstairs bathroom has caused the ceiling to grow black mould and dark stains.
In fact, you’re probably experiencing an ugly black or yellow stain on your ceiling right now that just won’t go away!

The reason behind these unsightly stains is likely due to a water leakage issue in your toilet or balcony cement slab. If you don’t resolve these leakages fast, the stain could become a health hazard!

Worry not, you can keep your leak from getting worse and solve your leaks by using these waterproofing solutions on your leak-prone areas.

1. Cement your leak-prone cracks

A contractor cementing the corners of a building as a way to waterproof corners.

Cement coatings are  used at the side of buildings as a form of external waterproofing.

This cheap waterproofing method uses cement mixed with acrylic additives to make a solid waterproof material used in sides of buildings or cement flat roofs. This is to seal places most likely to pool water from rain. Your hired contractor will spread a layer of cement mixture over hairline cracks to fill them in and prevent them from spreading.

Unfortunately, cement is still cement. Aside from its long drying time, this mixture is not very flexible. Temperature fluctuations throughout the day is likely to cause cracks when the cement expands and contracts. This makes it highly unsuitable for our Malaysian weather. As our weather jumps from being hot and humid, to rainy at a moment’s notice. Overtime, your cement coating might crack, making the roof more susceptible to leakage.

2. Coat a layer of asphalt on your cement flat roof

Bituminous (also known as asphalt) coatings use the same material found on roads.

Asphalt, or more specifically, bituminous coatings, are a petroleum-based waterproofing method. As a flexible material, it can be applied like paint, or stuck on surfaces as an adhesive. With its rubbery consistency, this method is pressure resistant to damage. As such, bituminous waterproof coating is usually used on flat areas like flat roofs.

However, this waterproofing material is not suitable for places that have sun exposure as it gets hot easily. You will need an additional cement coating to prevent it from cracking. Some of Nano-G’s experienced contractors recommends against using this material indoors. This is because the material used emits a faint odor that is harmful if inhaled for long periods of time.

3. Fill cracks with a PU injection

What if you want to try something that requires less mixing? A PU (Polyurethane) injection is another common way to fill up cracks found in the ceiling. Unfortunately, these techniques require drilling. Firstly, your contractor will treat the suspected leakage area by drilling a hole into the ceiling. Then, they will stick a motorized pump into the ceiling to fill in the hole with the expanding liquid.

In theory, this seems like your seal will reach a wide surface area but it’s not guaranteed to fill in every hairline crack.

PU injections take a week to dry off before your contractor comes back to remove these unsightly drips.

4. Coat a layer of epoxy resin on your floor

Okay, what about epoxy resin? This is remarked to be a very cheap method to cover all cracks in the floor, ceiling, or balcony. Your epoxy resin floor will also double as an anti-slip solution as well- but these benefits are only temporary.

Like the previous methods, you will have to be touch up and re-layer epoxy coatings over time. Not to mention, there will be a tedious pre-cleaning time and long waiting period until the floor is safe to be walked on again.

And do you really want your toilet, ceiling, or roof looking like a carpark?

5. Use nanotechnology waterproofing by Nano-G

One way to prevent water leakages is by waterproofing areas that tend to pool water.

5 Ways to Prevent a Bathroom Slip and Fall in Malaysia

How to prevent slip and fall accidents near the toilet or shower, at home, in the office, or at your business.

Slipping and tripping are common misfortunes a person may face when walking on a wet bathroom floor at home, or a damp toilet. Especially in Malaysia, where water from the shower or hose seems to splatter everywhere and take time to dry in our humid weather. While a fall is easy to recover from for some, toilet slip and fall accidents are more dangerous than you might think. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 646,000 individuals die from slip and fall accidents globally. Adults aged 65 and above make up the greatest number of these fatal falls. That’s why investing in anti-slip solutions for your bathroom is crucial.

45% of hospital visits from the elderly are a result of slip and falls at home.
A 2018 study by the Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine found that 45% of hospital visits from the elderly are a result of slip and falls at home.

Even if bathroom mishaps might not result in death, a slip near the toilet may lead to a miscarriage!

Findings from The Maternal and Child Health Journal found that 27% mothers surveyed had slipped and fell during pregnancy. Among them, 35 percent reported falling two or more times. 1.5% resulted in premature labor or delivery.

To prevent you or your loved ones from a bathroom slip and fall accident, you could take these preventative measures at home.

1. Install handrails near the toilet or shower

When you’re older, or pregnant, you might find that your balance is a little shifted. This is either due to a pre-existing medical condition- like weakened knees- or a growing person in your belly. Having a handrail installed near the toilet or shower area would be helpful in providing the walking assistance in a small space. Bear in mind that the sink, toilet paper dispenser or towel rack does not substitute a good handrail. They just aren’t designed to support the weight of a person gripping in need of walking assistance.

Toilet handrails, however, don’t exactly solve the issue of the flooring itself being wet and slippery.

2. Use an old clothes drying mat (with caution)

A common practice in the Malaysian household is to repurpose old t-shirts or towels as drying mats. It’s a quick and eco-friendly solution that reuses worn cloth that would have been thrown away.

Some of our drying mats might even have been made from your grandma.

For extra slip security, you could even use one of those rubber weighted mats that grip the mat to the floor.

But this might not be as safe of an option as you might think. For one, if the floor is wet, the mat is probably already drenched along with it. You only need to go to your nearest cafe or restaurant and observe how the weighted rubber mats outside their toilets still slip around the floor.

Not to mention, this method also doesn’t prevent the bathroom flooring from being wet.

3. Use Anti-Slip Tape or Mats on your bathroom floors

To tackle the wet and slippery bathroom floor, maybe you could use anti-slip tapes or mats.  These two anti-slip products function the same way by creating bevels on the floor for the user to walk safely about.

Anti-slip mats create bevelled rings on the floor that raises you from the wet floor.
Anti-slip tapes are water-resistant adhesives that create ridges on the floor.

While this method might be a good DIY way to slip-proof your shower or toilet, they aren’t good for long term prevention. The space between the anti-slip mat and the floor, for example, is still wet. This still body of water may get contaminated overtime with mould and bacteria. In high foot traffic spaces, anti-slip tape materials may lift to become slip and fall hazards of their own.

4. Coat your toilet floor with an epoxy coating

Okay, so what if you coated the floor with epoxy? Epoxy is a coating material used on the floors of public washrooms, carparks, and hospitals. It is a cheap long-term solution that keeps the flooring dry and waterproof on top of being anti-slip- but it… looks a bit like the surface of a swimming pool.

epoxy coatings belong in the car park, not your hope.

Do you really want your home’s bathroom or business’ toilet looking like a carpark?

5. Use Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating service for your bathroom or washroom tiles

You paid good money to install your tiles, you should be able to see them too!

What you need is a coating option that creates micro-grains on your flooring that doesn’t mess with the tile designs that you like.

Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating service ensures that your toilet or shower areas will be slip proof in a matter of 24 hours. Unlike the epoxy alternative, this anti-slip coating won’t change the appearance of the floor. Instead, it works by glossing over a transparent, rough layer on your tiles.
