3 Anti Slip Solutions for Your Home, Office, or Business

Looking to help your loved ones stay safe from slip and falls at home? Here are some of the common treatments and solutions currently found in the market.

Keeping accidents to a minimum at home is trickier than you think. You could lay down a mat near toilet entrances, but that old school and ineffective method can cause slip and fall accidents once the floor beneath becomes wet or mouldy.  You might also be considering other external anti-slip methods you can use in your home, like installing handrails, sticking anti-slip tape, or putting out anti-slip slippers. But ultimately, these methods do not exactly deal with the cause of most slip and falls: a slippery floor!

To deal with a slippery floor directly, some property or homeowners use chemical treatments, coatings, and solutions on their floors. However, choosing the right solutions or treatment can be tricky. So, our team compiled a quick breakdown of what to look out for when you stumble on common anti-slip solutions during your Google searches that you can use in your home, office and even business space.

Here is our in-depth explanation of the common solutions currently out in the market to tackle a slippery floor problem.

1. Epoxy flakes coatings for tiled bathroom or toilet floors.

This anti-slip method will drastically change the way your tilework looks, replacing it with a different design all together. Also, take note that the grout lines of your tiles will show through your new epoxy flakes coating surface.

Epoxy flakes coating create textured surfaces on tiled or concrete floors with epoxy chemicals and coloured flakes. While a no-hack method, it is not a noise-free and non-toxic solution. Most service providers will need to first grind the floor’s surface in order to create the texture needed to hold the epoxy chemicals when poured on. This means your perfectly good tiled floors will have to be scratched in order to be properly prepared for applications.

This invasive and irreversible process means there is no turning back if issues should arise during or after application. And still, grout lines from your original tile surface will still show through once the application has been dried.

Unfortunately, you will also have to endure harmful epoxy chemical fumes in the air during the application process, if you choose to oversee on-site operations. Homeowners should take note that resin material is known to cause respiratory issues as well as skin and eye irritation. It’s best if you have family members stay someplace else while the solution is being applied and dried. Because if you’re unlucky, exposure to the chemical can trigger asthma and other allergic reactions. 

Epoxy Fumes Contains Harmful Chemicals

In 2015, a study of epoxy resin workers found that they were more likely to report having respiratory issues as compared to their colleagues who weren’t as frequently exposed to the material. This study also noted that they were more likely to report COUGHING or WHEEZING, at a higher frequency than unexposed colleagues that were also smokers!

2. “Anti-Skid” 15-minute leave-on acid-etching sprays.

While browsing through social media, you are likely to have come across ads about 15-minute “Anti-Skid” sprays that are able to anti-slip your home tiles almost as soon as the treatment touches the surface. At glance, this seems like a cheap and simple DIY solution. All you need to do is spray, wait, and rinse. As long as you closely follow the instructions on the label, you should be able to get the anti-slip surface you want.

In the industry, we call this treatment “acid etching sprays”. They work by using acidic solutions that turn surfaces rough and full of pores. While they may give you instantaneous results,  you’ll have to make sure you can maintain the cleanliness of these said surfaces. If you’re the type to leave bathroom cleaning to when you absolutely need to clean, the holes created are likely to hide bacteria and mould in their smallest of pores. Over time, these small colonies will grow and form a slimy film on top of your tile surfaces. What’s worse, this new bacterial or fungal film would be deeply embedded into the networks found within the pores, making them almost impossible to clean. 

Anti-Skid sprays are effective because they use acid to etch tile or concrete surfaces. If you choose to use this method, be sure to always keep your floors clean from any bacteria, fungi or spores! Microbial colonies form quick and can make the floor more slippery than before.
