3 Anti Slip Solutions for Your Home, Office, or Business

3 Anti Slip Solutions for Your Home, Office, or Business

Looking to help your loved ones stay safe from slip and falls at home? Here are some of the common treatments and solutions currently found in the market.

Keeping accidents to a minimum at home is trickier than you think. You could lay down a mat near toilet entrances, but that old school and ineffective method can cause slip and fall accidents once the floor beneath becomes wet or mouldy.  You might also be considering other external anti-slip methods you can use in your home, like installing handrails, sticking anti-slip tape, or putting out anti-slip slippers. But ultimately, these methods do not exactly deal with the cause of most slip and falls: a slippery floor!

To deal with a slippery floor directly, some property or homeowners use chemical treatments, coatings, and solutions on their floors. However, choosing the right solutions or treatment can be tricky. So, our team compiled a quick breakdown of what to look out for when you stumble on common anti-slip solutions during your Google searches that you can use in your home, office and even business space.

Here is our in-depth explanation of the common solutions currently out in the market to tackle a slippery floor problem.

1. Epoxy flakes coatings for tiled bathroom or toilet floors.

Epoxy Flakes Antislip

This anti-slip method will drastically change the way your tilework looks, replacing it with a different design all together. Also, take note that the grout lines of your tiles will show through your new epoxy flakes coating surface.

Epoxy flakes coating create textured surfaces on tiled or concrete floors with epoxy chemicals and coloured flakes. While a no-hack method, it is not a noise-free and non-toxic solution. Most service providers will need to first grind the floor’s surface in order to create the texture needed to hold the epoxy chemicals when poured on. This means your perfectly good tiled floors will have to be scratched in order to be properly prepared for applications.

This invasive and irreversible process means there is no turning back if issues should arise during or after application. And still, grout lines from your original tile surface will still show through once the application has been dried.

Unfortunately, you will also have to endure harmful epoxy chemical fumes in the air during the application process, if you choose to oversee on-site operations. Homeowners should take note that resin material is known to cause respiratory issues as well as skin and eye irritation. It’s best if you have family members stay someplace else while the solution is being applied and dried. Because if you’re unlucky, exposure to the chemical can trigger asthma and other allergic reactions.

Epoxy Fumes Contains Harmful Chemicals

In 2015, a study of epoxy resin workers found that they were more likely to report having respiratory issues as compared to their colleagues who weren’t as frequently exposed to the material. This study also noted that they were more likely to report COUGHING or WHEEZING, at a higher frequency than unexposed colleagues that were also smokers!

2. “Anti-Skid” 15-minute leave-on acid-etching sprays.

While browsing through social media, you are likely to have come across ads about 15-minute “Anti-Skid” sprays that are able to anti-slip your home tiles almost as soon as the treatment touches the surface. At glance, this seems like a cheap and simple DIY solution. All you need to do is spray, wait, and rinse. As long as you closely follow the instructions on the label, you should be able to get the anti-slip surface you want.

In the industry, we call this treatment “acid etching sprays”. They work by using acidic solutions that turn surfaces rough and full of pores. While they may give you instantaneous results,  you’ll have to make sure you can maintain the cleanliness of these said surfaces. If you’re the type to leave bathroom cleaning to when you absolutely need to clean, the holes created are likely to hide bacteria and mould in their smallest of pores. Over time, these small colonies will grow and form a slimy film on top of your tile surfaces. What’s worse, this new bacterial or fungal film would be deeply embedded into the networks found within the pores, making them almost impossible to clean.

Anti-Skid sprays are effective because they use acid to etch tile or concrete surfaces. If you choose to use this method, be sure to always keep your floors clean from any bacteria, fungi or spores! Microbial colonies form quick and can make the floor more slippery than before.

Certified as One of The Most Effective Anti-Slip Solutions by SIRIM

Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating transforms surfaces to only have less than 1 in a million chance of causing slip and fall accidents even when wet!

We’re proud to announce that our Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating has been certified by SIRIM as one of the most effective anti-slip solution in Malaysia. They’ve tallied our Pendulum Test Values to be at 93 PTV for dry areas, and 56 PTV for wet areas!

We’re glad to be providing SIRIM Certified anti-slip solution to all our clients, saving many loved ones from avoidable accidents.

What is a Pendulum Test?

A Pendulum Test is a type of quality assurance method specifically designed to test how slippery a surface is by using a swinging pendulum. This pendulum mimics how the heel of a foot (as represented with a rubber slider) would slip on a surface when it is wet or dry, such as when you are running, walking, or even just standing.

What the pendulum test measures is the Slip Potential of a surface, using a scale that shows where the ‘foot’ stops swinging. Ideally, the surface being tested on would create enough resistance or friction for the foot, letting it swing and stop closer to the ground. The quality assurance expert will then make and record a few swings before finding the average to measure the Pendulum Test Value (PTV) of a surface that would fall within the ranges of High, Moderate, and Low Slip Potentials.

The Pendulum Test tries to mimic how the heel of the foot would slip after coming into contact with a slippery surface.

The average result from the pendulum test indicates how likely a person would slip on a surface.

The PTV listed here measures the slip potential of surfaces that receive foot traffic for people wearing shoes. A PTV higher than 36 indicates that the solution is especially effective for wet area conditions.

” Based on our results, Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating falls in the PTV of 36+ range, meaning our solution is effective enough in guarantee less than a 1 in a million chance of a slip and fall accident at home! “

Paul Sia, Nano-G Managing Director.

Why is the Pendulum Test important?

It’s a matter of transparency and having a trusted government body assess how our claims match up to the performance of our product! While we’re confident about how effective our solution is at saving lives, having a big institution prove and back us up to being the best slip-resistant formula for floors helps let you, our customers, know that you can trust us.

What’s more, the Pendulum Test is a well-respected and accurate measurement of slip resistance. It has a long history in the United Kingdom’s flooring industry as part of its slip resistance tests that specifically looks into the quality of a tile (or in this case, a treated tile)’s friction. It is not easy to get as high of a score(s) that our solution has! However, we should mention that our solution is only a preventative measure to be put on slippery surfaces.

Also, Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating isn’t just good for providing an excellent grainy-textured surface to your floor. Our solution also enhances the look of your floors, can be applied on most surfaces, and is able to keep your tiles easy to clean! We have a whole article on what makes Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating great, so here are 5 Reasons Why You Should Choose Nano-G Anti-Slip Floor Coating.

Nano-G Anti-slip Solution For Healthcare Workers And The Elderly

The Best Way Healthcare Facilities Can Prevent Slip & Fall Accidents at The Toilet

Get Nano-G to help your hospital, clinic or old folks home protect both your healthcare professionals and patients.

As we move into the second phase of COVID-19 vaccinations in Malaysia, healthcare facilities will be experiencing higher foot traffic from the elderly and high-risk groups. But is your clinic safe to receive these patients? Hospitals, clinics, and old folks homes alike all experience slip and falls due to spills or just plain misfortune. More often than not, these accidents tend to happen in toilets and bathrooms! While the elderly could just use the disability toilets, handrails are not always able to keep them safe, especially when the problem is a slippery floor. Hence, this highlights the importance of applying anti-slip solution in healthcare facilities such as hospital, clinics and even old folks home.

What is an anti-slip floor coating?

An anti-slip floor coating is a layer of grainy or textured material applied onto an existing floor surface. The material used is usually made up of gloss, resin, or acrylic that create small beads that give your feet the added grip you need to walk safely with. They are best applied on surfaces that are prone to slip and fall accidents, such as in the toilet areas.

Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating is an example of an effective water-based anti-slip solution that keeps your hospital floor steady even when wet! This is because of the hydrophobic feature it has that keeps water from affecting the surface you walk on. It’s a value-added quality that keeps your healthcare facility free from accidents that are beyond your control, such as accidental water spills or puddles that form from wet shoes. Not only that, but our solution is also able to keep your toilet floors easy-to-clean and presentable to your visitors!

5 Ways Your Swimming Pool is Safer with Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Solution

Swimming pool areas get really slippery and slimy, making them a hazard to the young and old- but it doesn’t have to be that way.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), accidents around the pool is one of the leading causes of deaths per year. What makes the swimming pool area so dangerous is that a person could fall forward, exposing his or her head, face, neck, and spine to harsh impact on the floor. If they’re unlucky, the victim might fall into the pool and not be able to swim out. In 2014, WHO found that around 372 000 people die from drowning every year, and noticed that over half of these victims are below 25 years old. And even if an accident around the pool doesn’t lead to death, both children and adults can still slip, fall, and experience major injuries or broken bones!

Unfortunately, many potentially fatal slip and fall accidents go unreported as victims and the people around them brush it off as clumsiness but we fail to realise that these areas need to be thoroughly safety-checked! If not, well, it would result in accidents that could’ve been prevented at the surface level. Back in 2018, 500 out of 700 reported cases of drowning in Malaysia were children under 18 years old!

It’s time to give your swimming pool areas the added protection it needs to prevent slip and falls from happening in the first place. We highly recommend business owners or residents with swimming pools to apply Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating before a mishap happens.

You might want to check out our previous articles where we reviewed the most common anti-slip solutions in the market and Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-slip Solutions.

1. Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating adds a grainy texture to your swimming pool surfaces.

Our solution is able to make pools safer by just adding a grainy texture to your swim deck’s surface. That means you don’t have to remove your existing tiles or hack at your deck to get the anti-slip protection you need! This grainy texture from Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating gives bare feet the grip and friction it needs-without being too rough to wet skin.

Our gentle texture helps little ones play and have fun without hurting their sensitive feet.

Therefore, this feature makes the solution especially effective for areas that get wet most of the time. Such as in shower room areas, walkways, swimming pool borders, locker rooms, and restrooms areas.

2. It’s suitable for both smooth ceramic and rough stone-textured surfaces.

Here’s an observation: just because you have a stone-textured surface, doesn’t mean it won’t get slippery. Our waterpark clients, such as Gamuda Garden Water Theme Park, have requested for their sandstone floors to have our anti-slip solution as an added prevention against slip-and-fall accidents.

Still, the texture needed on smooth ceramic tiles is not the same as the texture needed on rough sandstone surfaces. That’s why our experts are here to guide our clients to choose between our 100 and 500 grain texture during our consultations.

anti slip grain type comparison

The Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating Grip 100 is most suitable for smooth surfaces- such as ceramic, porcelain, and mosaic tiles. Grip 500 is reserved for rougher surfaces, such as sandstone, cement, and brick textures.

3. Our solution is non-toxic and water-based.

Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating is the more preferred way to anti-slip swimming pool areas because it doesn’t require any added chemicals or use chemical etching to stick onto your surfaces. In fact, our solution is water-based and safe enough that our clients can be around while we coat their tiles! This also means that no harmful fumes will be released during drying time.

swimming pool deck anti-slip prevention

As you can see from this during-and-after slider, there wouldn’t be any changes to your swimming pool tiles once Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating is applied. You don’t even have to worry about our solution getting into your pool water, as it is non-toxic when wet or dry.

4. Our solution is long lasting and effective that it’s resistant to sun damage, peeling, and scratches.

Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating is the long-lasting surface protection you need that doesn’t wear down easily. We really only apply a thin layer to create the desired texture that doesn’t get weaker against chemicals found in the pool water or in pool cleaning products.

Look at that, you can even run a coin across the surface and it wouldn’t affect its surface!

Our solution is also able to be resistant to the test of time! Sun and heat don’t cause the protective layer to crack, or peel. Rocks, coins, or dust also don’t scratch or damage your glossy new surfaces.

5. Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating can prevent slimy and algae-filled swim decks!

Despite the chlorine in pool water- life still finds a way on the microscopic level. Many home and business owners that worked with us in the past found that the most dangerous thing about keeping pools is that the surroundings and wet spots are prone to microbial growth. If you forget to do routine maintenance of your swimming pool area, you’re likely to experience the deck feeling a little slimier than usual! It’s especially common in humid and closed spaces- such as indoor or shaded pools.

Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating can be used swimming pool tiles too. We recommend having a layer at the staircase area to prevent swimmers from slipping while entering- and possibly hitting a sharp edge in the process!

Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating’s hydrophobic feature can keep the swimming pool area cleaner for longer by making maintenance easier. Our solution prevents tiles, grouts, and textured surfaces from holding on to mould and bacteria. This makes them easier to wash and wipe off, without leaving residues or water droplets behind when you wipe or sweep away access water.

Our services help keep swimming pools safe for both adults and children!

I provide swim classes for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. So, the tiles were a little bit slippery and that causes a risk of people falling, so that’s why we decided to look into an anti-slip solution. The tiles are definitely less slippery because it (now) has some beads that made the surface rougher.”

5 Reasons Why You Should Choose Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating

The most convenient anti-slip solution in the market.

Looking for a good quality anti-slip floor coating solution? You’ve probably seen ads on websites or your social media for conventional anti-slip methods that seem too good to be true. However, Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating remains as the most hassle-free and effective solution to your slippery floor problems.

We’ve extensively covered why you really should get your slippery floor problems fixed in our previous articles. Have a look to learn about why we do what we do.

With the number of accidents that happen year after year, we’ve decided to share a special solution to the problem with home and business owners alike to keep vulnerable groups safe in their own premises.

Here are 5 reasons why Nano-G Anti-Slip Floor Coating is the solution for you.

1. Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating doesn’t change the look of your existing tiles.

Our solution doesn’t require hacking or retiling to fix slippery floor problems. Instead, we work with the surface itself. Our water-based solution is able to provide an anti-slip layer using a  non-acid etching method that doesn’t damage the floor in any way. Instead, it creates a textured and glossy surface on the floor that works by providing your feet with the friction it needs to stay stable while walking across the room!

2. Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating is applicable on most surfaces.

Another reason why you should get Nano-G’s anti-slip experts to work on your floors is that our solution is suitable for a wide range of surfaces. That means the product works on shiny or glossy tiles, natural or artificial wood decking, sandstone walkways, clay flooring, metal decks, concrete surfaces, and granite or marble surfaces.

Nano-G Anti Slip Floor Coating is applicable on most surfaces

Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating is applicable to most surfaces found in residential or commercial buildings.

Not only that, the glossy effect of our solution is able to help enhance the look of your tiles, especially for older homes. This means that your faded floors can be given a second life in looking shiny and brand new.

3. Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating comes in two grain sizes to suit the needs of your premise.

We provide our clients with two options for textured surfaces during our consultations. Namely, you will be able to pick between having a 100 or 500-grain surface. While both will provide you with the added friction your feet need to keep from slipping and falling, they have different uses for different types of surfaces.

anti slip grain type comparison

4. Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating is hydrophobic.

Aside from just providing excellent friction and texture to your floors, Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating is also hydrophobic! Hydrophobic floors don’t absorb the moisture or allow water to clump together for long in grouts or corners of the room.

Our hydrophobic solution is able to stop water from making your floors slippery!

Not only that, because moisture will not be absorbed into grouts or pooled in corners, mould and bacteria will be less likely to grow and keeps grouts looking clean!

5. Your new floors will be scratch and stain-resistant.

This water-based solution is a hard and durable layer that covers your surfaces entirely. Our micro grain textures are so tough that they don’t detach or chip easily. This effect is able to protect the surface underneath the layer from getting weathered down from everyday use, small rocks, or any spills that may result in stains.

We highly recommend Nano-G Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating to be applied in homes that have vulnerable groups of people, this ranges form the elderly, pregnant women, or children with special needs. In a study of 322 elderly patients visiting a hospital clinic, 120 out of 322 participants reported having fallen in 2017. The researchers recommend that extra precautions to be taken in ensuring the safety of elderly family members.

So we asked Nano-G to help us with their anti-slip floor coating services, and in just three hours, our toilet floor is covered by the colourless and traceless anti-slip surface. Other than a new layer of the matte surface, it looks and feels like nothing had changed. My mom can use the toilet in peace!”

Nano-G vs Epoxy Flakes Solution

Everything You Need To Know About Epoxy Flakes And ‘No-Hacking’ Anti-slip Solutions

When researching for the right long-lasting anti-slip floor coating, you may come across service providers that promise a toxic-free, hack-free, or even quick-drying Epoxy Floor Coating solution.

With our own experiences as homeowners and industry experts, we feel that it is our duty to point out what might not be the best anti-slip solution for home or business owners. Below is a side-by-side comparison chart that compares Epoxy Flakes Coating techniques to Nano-G Anti-slip Floor Coating solutions.

Nano-G Anti-Slip Floor Coating Vs Epoxy Flake Coating

Nano-G’s completion time might vary according to the surface area our solution has to cover. Smaller, less humid areas are able to dry within 24 hours after project completion, but larger outdoor areas might take 48 hours or more. Please discuss with the supervisor on the day of your appointment to get a more accurate estimation of when your anti-slip floor coating will be completely dry to use.

What is Epoxy Flake Coating?

Epoxy Flake Coating is an anti-slip method that spreads a layer of Epoxy chemicals on the floor before adding coloured flakes on top as a way to create texture and patterns. These Epoxy chemicals include a resin material and a hardener that has to be blow-torched to fuse and create a new surface. While it may be a popular search item that pops up whenever you Google anti-slip solutions, there are some things you need to know when considering Epoxy-based solutions.

Epoxy Flake Coating, a coating method commonly used in public toilets or industrial places.

1. Epoxy Flake Coating preparation stage can get very noisy!

As part of the preparation stage, your service provider might choose a grinding method to apply their flake coating. This means the on-site technician will sand your tiled floors with a machine in order to make a rough surface. This is because there is a specific profile that lets epoxy to properly bind and stay on the floor.

Epoxy Flake Coatings need a specific type of surface in order to help the material to stick onto it.

That being said, this grinding process is incredibly damaging to your tiles, especially if you had installed very expensive high-quality bathroom tiles. There is no turning back once you use this method. Grinding will create scratches on the surface, effectively ruining the original quality of your tiles.

2. Epoxy Flake Coatings will change the overall appearance of your floor.

The way this anti-slip treatment works is by creating a hard, thick layer on top of your existing floors. To avoid a weird clear-watery look, some service providers have taken to adding coloured flakes to their epoxy mixture to give their treatments more texture or design work. Whether or not the finished design would look the way as advertised is up to the skill level and experience of the contractor working on your floors.

This anti-slip method will drastically change the way your tilework looks, replacing it with a different design all together. Also, take note that the grout lines of your tiles will show through your new epoxy flakes coating surface.

However, Nano-G’s Anti-Slip Floor Coating is able to maintain the appearance of your tiles while still providing the slip-proof properties you need for your toilets, bathrooms, or kitchen areas. This is because our experts need only to apply a transparent micro-grain texture on your tiles that doesn’t get slippery- even when wet or soapy! The best thing about Nano-G’s Anti-Slip Floor Coating is that it doesn’t cause any changes to your original tile work, unlike Epoxy Flakes coating.

3. Wet Epoxy emits strong and harmful fumes into the room.

The Epoxy Flake Coating process requires the binding of chemicals in high temperatures to form a thick and hard layer on your floor. Due to the nature of the way this treatment is done, it’s best for homeowners to not be near the work area. The person laying down the Epoxy materials also has to be mindful about keeping the room properly ventilated and for themselves to be in proper protective wear to prevent these fumes from causing damage to their lungs.

Back in 2018, a 71 year old man was found unconscious from inhaling too much Epoxy fumes while painting Epoxy on the top basement floor. The worker was then sent to the emergency department where doctors found traces of Epoxy fumes on his breath.

On the contrary, Nano-G’s Anti-Slip Floor Coating solution doesn’t emit harmful or toxic smells while it’s being applied. Therefore, you and your family may still be present in the home as we carry on our work.

Nano-G has received several reports from ex-workers of epoxy companies that reveal despite using gloves and enforcing the use of protective gear, their hands become swollen after a long day's work with epoxy flakes coating materials. Many of these workers decide to come to Nano-G as they noticed our solution is eco-friendly and non-toxic. That means that even if the solution would get onto their skin, it wouldn't have as drastic of a reaction as epoxy materials have.

4. Wet Epoxy has a really long drying time.

On top of these unpleasant harmful fumes, your home will be exposed to, you will have to bear in mind that the solution takes really long to dry. In fact, the longest amount of time you might have to wait for your Epoxy to dry completely can take more than 7 days, sometimes even go up to 30 days!

Imagine after your contractor has finished applying the Epoxy Flakes coating and you’re STILL unable to use the bathroom. It is extremely inconvenient for homes with elderly and pregnant women! You could close off your toilet for a few days and set up a ventilation fan to keep the fumes out… but it’s not that simple. Your family will still be exposed to harmful chemicals for a good few days. This is especially risky for those suffering from asthma.

With Nano-G, we ensure our experts conduct their work in a professional manner that respects your time and keeps things safe for you. As our non-toxic solution doesn’t involve the fusing of strong chemicals, we only need less than 24 hours to properly prepare and cover a 15 sq ft toilet or bathroom. Your well-being while we provide our service is our top priority.

5. Epoxy doesn’t breathe and traps moisture below its surface. Your new Epoxy floors may… peel!

If the air is too humid during application time, moisture will get absorbed into the wet Epoxy or get trapped under the coating layer, causing cracks to form on its surface once it is fully dried.  The surface wouldn’t look as good once it is peeled or bubbling. Nano-G, however, is a transparent water-based coating that wouldn’t change the appearance of your floors. Therefore, our solution peeling off or being an eyesore will not happen.

When applying the Epoxy coating, a contractor has to take extra care that the floor has no water droplets or residues beforehand. This is a little more complicated when treating concrete, the material you find between (a.k.a the grouts) and underneath (a.k.a. the concrete slab) your tile work, as they tend to absorb moisture. Usually, an extra measure you would be recommended to take is to not wet the floor whenever you’re using the toilet a few days before the on-site work. Still, it will take quite some time before the water to fully evaporate and it is best to not rush this stage.

There are special measures contractors need to take during the wet Epoxy’s drying time as well. If the air is too humid, moisture will get absorbed into the wet Epoxy or get trapped under the coating layer, causing cracks to form on its surface once it is fully dried.

6. If you experience problems with your new Epoxy floor- it’s going to be really complicated to fix.

Epoxy Flake Coatings require careful scraping and grinding done by professionals to remove if there should be any issues. That’s because proper Epoxy work dries into a thick hard layer that is meant to withstand scrapes and pressure for a long period of time. It’s an especially complicated process to rectify coatings in toilets or bathrooms with existing tiles underneath. If the contractor is not careful, they may crack or cause further damage to your tiles (and subsequently your concrete slabs), leading to more costly repair work.

Our coating does not change the outlook of the tiles, hence it’s unlikely to experience any problems. It is a longer-lasting coating with near-zero maintenance required. If you’re dissatisfied with the outcome of your anti-slip floor, our solution wouldn’t be as much of a hassle.

For example, in one of Nano-G’s previous jobs, our client came back to us with a special request to change the grain sizes on their swimming pool deck to be finer. On their next available date, we came over, cleaned and dried the pool area, and reapplied a new Nano-G Anti-Slip Floor Coating layer on the deck that suited our client’s preferences better. While we will advise the suitable grains you should get for your homes, you may call us back to come and retouch the floor if you prefer a less grainy surface.

7. Epoxy Flake Coatings require an expert touch.

It goes without saying that handling the strong chemicals used in Epoxy work should be left to experienced professionals. Not only do they know how to properly prepare the work area, they also come equipped with the right materials, attire, and industry know-how for quality workmanship.

Not just any Tom, Dick and Harry can pull off a proper Epoxy Floor Coating. Amateur mistakes can lead to unsightly floors with stains and marks.

Despite the risks and health hazards that come with an inexperienced hand, it is ultimately your own decision on what type of service you’d like for your home.

Slip and Fall Prevention for Your Kitchen Staff

Keep your staff safe from workplace accidents!

Greasy floors in a busy kitchen at rush hour are a slip and fall accident waiting to happen, keep your workers safe and happy by applying anti-slip on your floors.

As a restaurant owner, you’re probably concerned about the health and safety of your kitchen staff during the lunch or dinner rush. Where food orders seem never-ending and everyone is moving quickly. It doesn’t help that throughout these shifts oil and food debris build-up on the floor and leave the floor greasy and slippery.

Video Credit: CNA via YouTube
In 2019, CNA reported that more than 50% of workplace slip and fall accidents happen in the kitchen and are 80% more likely to happen during peak hours.

Ways to keep your kitchen staff safe from slip and fall accidents

1. Lay down anti-slip rubber mats

Anti-slip maps create bevelled surfaces for you to walk on.

A common practice by restaurant owners in curbing the slip and fall issue is to lay down rubber anti-slip mats (much like in the photo above). However, anti-slip mats can accumulate debris over time, becoming slip and fall hazards on their own. This is because anti-slip mats are still just flat pieces of plastic on the ground that will give way even if the floor is oily or wet.

2. Equip your staff with safety shoes

These shoes are different from your normal shoes because of the number of grooves it has on its sole.

Another way to keep your kitchen workplace safer is by having the dress code to include safety, also known as anti-slip, shoes. Anti-slip shoes manage to give the staff member more grip by providing the wearer more tact and grip when walking or crossing the floor. In fact, it is a common safety measure enforced by bigger restaurant chain owners who have staff members that move around a lot more.

Still, anti-slip mats and shoes don’t exactly tackle the problem of a greasy and slippery floor.

3. Coat a layer of Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution on your floors

Nano-G Anti-Slip Floor Coating provides friction on the surface without changing the appearance of the floor.

The key reason why your kitchen staff may slip and fall in the kitchen is because of the slippery and greasy floor, due to a lack of friction it provides. Even after the daily after-work scrubbing, the residual layer of food debris and oil will still remain on the floor surface.

Therefore, one good way to deal with the issue is to slip-proof the floor itself- and Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution is able to do just that. Our anti-slip floor coating solution doubles as an anti-microbial and waterproof layer that doesn’t get slippery even when water is splashed on it. It also has the added benefits of being easy to clean, easy to maintain and having a clear coat.

And you don’t have to stop a few days worth of work to have the kitchen slip-proofed! Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution ensures that the kitchen will be slip-proof in a matter of 24 hours. What’s more, you don’t have to hack at the kitchen floor or tiles. Instead, we will be coating a transparent and grainy anti-slip layer on your floor that doesn’t change the appearance of your kitchen floor.

So, that’s why you need a long-term solution to prevent slip and falls in the restaurant kitchen.

By having a layer of Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution on your kitchen floor, you save a lot of hassle in keeping your kitchen safe. For one, you and your staff can rest assured that your anti-slip mat and shoes will work twice as effective with the added precaution of our solution, as our solution is embedded into the smallest pore of your kitchen floor.

Protect the Elderly From Slip and Fall Accidents at the Toilets

Worried about your elderly loved one falling while using the toilet? Slip-proof their floors!

Elderly adults are more prone to slip and fall accidents near the toilet. In fact, a 2018 study by the Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine found that 45% of hospital visits from the elderly are a result of slip and falls at home. Given their fragile bones, these falls can often have serious consequences, including fatalities. This emphasizes the need for effective anti-slip solution to safeguard the elderly in their homes especially their toilet.

In this panel discussion between doctors and nutritionists from Astro AEC’s Health 123 program, it was revealed that 25% of elderly adults above the age of 80 who fell and suffered a femoral fracture die within the year of falling down.

And honestly, critical slip and falls accidents are more common than you think, read more about it here: Fatal Slip and Fall Injuries in Malaysia are More Common Than you Think

That is why we need to take extra precautions for our elderly loved ones.

Ways to Slip-Proof the Elderly’s Toilets

1. Get to the root of the problem with Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating.

Nano-G Anti-Slip Coating on floor tiles
As you can see, our Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution creates micrograins on your floors that give your feet extra grit when walking around.

The main cause of slip and fall accidents are slippery floors. So, what you need is a coating option that creates micrograins on your flooring that keeps the floor from getting slippery when wet.

Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution ensures that the toilet will be slip-proof in a matter of 24 hours.  What’s more, you don’t have to hack at your walls, or tiles to install extra fixtures to slip-proof your toilet! Instead, we will be coating a transparent and grainy anti-slip layer on your floor that doesn’t change the appearance of your toilet floor.

2. Fix grab bars near the toilet

Another reason why the elderly lose their balance when using the toilet is because of a lack of support when getting up or sitting down. If you’re unable to hire help to assist your elderly loved one, installing grab bars near the toilet AND slip-proofing your toilet floor is a good move to make.

And no, the sink, the toilet paper dispenser, or the toilet rack are not substitutes for a grab bar, as these fixtures are installed more superficially on the walls and are likely to give way if force was put on them.

A towel rack that gave way after force was put on it.

Now, imagine if your elderly loved one was holding on to it for support. They might just end up slipping and cutting themselves on that sharp, exposed end. The goal is to avoid a hospital visit, not create another potential accident.

3. Upgrade your squat toilet to a seated one

The older we get, the less strength we’re able to exert to support ourselves. It’s even more of an issue when lowering your full body into a squatting position over a damp toilet floor. That’s a slip and fall hazard just waiting to happen. And, even if they don’t slip, they may not be able to get up from the squatting position!

That’s why, if you have the means to, upgrade the squat toilet into a seated one for your elderly loved one’s convenience.

A further upgrade is to add an adjustable toilet seat to it, to further lessen the need to squat when using the toilet.

4. Use an anti-slip mat or tape

Another way you can keep your elderly loved one safe from a slip and fall accident is by laying down an anti-slip mat or by placing anti-slip tapes on parts of the toilet that are slip-prone, such as near the toilet bowl or near the door.

Some of our drying mats might even have been made from your grandma.

Still, they don’t directly deal with the issue of a slippery wet floor and will become a slip hazard on their own over time.

5. Declutter the toilet floor

A cluttered toilet floor can cause a slip and fall accident, whereby a stray brush or soap bar can be accidentally stepped on that makes the user skid on the surface. It can also cause additional injuries such as a bruised eye from falling on the handle of a toilet brush.

Oftentimes, our toilets are cluttered because we keep cleaning supplies and equipment around. So, as a general rule of thumb, avoid using the toilet as a storage room for your cleaning supplies or tools. That’s what cabinets and shelves are for!

But honestly, even with a neat toilet room with grab bars, a seated and adjustable toilet, and anti-slip mats and tape- you’re still not fixing the number one cause of slip and fall accidents: a slippery floor.

So, before doing heavy, and costly, renovations to your parent’s toilet, give Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating solution a go. For a lot of Nano-G’s past clients, the anti-slip solution was more than enough to keep their elderly family members from having slip and fall accidents.

5 Ways to Prevent a Bathroom Slip and Fall in Malaysia

How to prevent slip and fall accidents near the toilet or shower, at home, in the office, or at your business.

Slipping and tripping are common misfortunes a person may face when walking on a wet bathroom floor at home, or a damp toilet. Especially in Malaysia, where water from the shower or hose seems to splatter everywhere and take time to dry in our humid weather. While a fall is easy to recover from for some, toilet slip and fall accidents are more dangerous than you might think. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 646,000 individuals die from slip and fall accidents globally. Adults aged 65 and above make up the greatest number of these fatal falls. That’s why investing in anti-slip solutions for your bathroom is crucial.

45% of hospital visits from the elderly are a result of slip and falls at home.
A 2018 study by the Malaysian Journal of Public Health Medicine found that 45% of hospital visits from the elderly are a result of slip and falls at home.

Even if bathroom mishaps might not result in death, a slip near the toilet may lead to a miscarriage!

Findings from The Maternal and Child Health Journal found that 27% mothers surveyed had slipped and fell during pregnancy. Among them, 35 percent reported falling two or more times. 1.5% resulted in premature labor or delivery.

To prevent you or your loved ones from a bathroom slip and fall accident, you could take these preventative measures at home.

1. Install handrails near the toilet or shower

When you’re older, or pregnant, you might find that your balance is a little shifted. This is either due to a pre-existing medical condition- like weakened knees- or a growing person in your belly. Having a handrail installed near the toilet or shower area would be helpful in providing the walking assistance in a small space. Bear in mind that the sink, toilet paper dispenser or towel rack does not substitute a good handrail. They just aren’t designed to support the weight of a person gripping in need of walking assistance.

Toilet handrails, however, don’t exactly solve the issue of the flooring itself being wet and slippery.

2. Use an old clothes drying mat (with caution)

A common practice in the Malaysian household is to repurpose old t-shirts or towels as drying mats. It’s a quick and eco-friendly solution that reuses worn cloth that would have been thrown away.

Some of our drying mats might even have been made from your grandma.

For extra slip security, you could even use one of those rubber weighted mats that grip the mat to the floor.

But this might not be as safe of an option as you might think. For one, if the floor is wet, the mat is probably already drenched along with it. You only need to go to your nearest cafe or restaurant and observe how the weighted rubber mats outside their toilets still slip around the floor.

Not to mention, this method also doesn’t prevent the bathroom flooring from being wet.

3. Use Anti-Slip Tape or Mats on your bathroom floors

To tackle the wet and slippery bathroom floor, maybe you could use anti-slip tapes or mats.  These two anti-slip products function the same way by creating bevels on the floor for the user to walk safely about.

Anti-slip tapes are water-resistant adhesives that create ridges on the floor.

While this method might be a good DIY way to slip-proof your shower or toilet, they aren’t good for long term prevention. The space between the anti-slip mat and the floor, for example, is still wet. This still body of water may get contaminated overtime with mould and bacteria. In high foot traffic spaces, anti-slip tape materials may lift to become slip and fall hazards of their own.

4. Coat your toilet floor with an epoxy coating

Okay, so what if you coated the floor with epoxy? Epoxy is a coating material used on the floors of public washrooms, carparks, and hospitals. It is a cheap long-term solution that keeps the flooring dry and waterproof on top of being anti-slip- but it… looks a bit like the surface of a swimming pool.

Do you really want your home’s bathroom or business’ toilet looking like a carpark?

5. Use Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-Slip Floor Coating service for your bathroom or washroom tiles

You paid good money to install your tiles, you should be able to see them too!

What you need is a coating option that creates micro-grains on your flooring that doesn’t mess with the tile designs that you like.

Nano-G’s Nanotechnology Anti-slip Floor Coating service ensures that your toilet or shower areas will be slip proof in a matter of 24 hours. Unlike the epoxy alternative, this anti-slip coating won’t change the appearance of the floor. Instead, it works by glossing over a transparent, rough layer on your tiles.
